Tree Farmer starts with ...
I have a loquat tree, and it is about 7 years old and does not bear fruit. This year, it haves produced only about 10 loquats. What should I do?

If it is a seedling it takes 11 years to produce a good crop. Do not despair.

My seedling Nagasakawase loquat took ~7 years to first fruit. Production was greater in following years. I couldn't find any grafted varieties at that time so I had to wait. I eventually stumbled onto this site in 2008 and mail ordered both grafted varieties available, which fruited in their very first year.
Your loquat tree appears to be on par with my first seedling so, really, you're on track.

I have had seedling loquats bearing at about 4 years and good crops at 7 years. We would pick a bucketful at a time from one tree. It was a great strain. The first crop on a grafted one called Mammoth was very sour. Subsequent crops were increasingly sweeter. It was on a dwarfing quince rootstock but still grew amazingly big and fast.

JohnMc, how does your seedling fruit compare with the named varieties? I understood fruit from seedlings were in the main inferior.

Chris, the fruit from the one and only (Naga)seedling was absolutely gorgeous. It would be hard to think there would be a better tasting loquat out there. I had the fruit covered with organza bags till they ripened to perfection. Must be a great frustration to a lot of ff.
