Speedy says... I've grown them from seed in the past, but not seen them through to fruiting. Dates are dioecious , and take up to 12-15 yrs to flower, not to say they cant flower sooner though. you'll need a male and a female , long time to wait if you have just two and they're both males :-( If you do have at least one of each and they set fruit there is no guarentee of good quality of the fruit. Bris should have enough heat and be not too cool, they'll grow well , but humidity or rain at the wrong time will be a problem for fruit rotting and if not that you'd need to guard against fruit bats. as far as climate goes, there's an old saying that "Date Palms like their head in the fire and feet in the water" they grow and fruit best in frost free (can handle a bit of frost) dry desert climate with good access to water. They'll grow into a beautiful palm there though nonetheless | About the Author Speedy Nthn Vic. 6th February 2012 11:49pm #UserID: 2305 Posts: View All Speedy's Edible Fruit Trees![]() |
