Moving a new mango

7 or 8 weeks ago I planted a dwarf mango tree, about 1m tall. It has done well, has about 25cm of new growth already. Unfortunately I have had to rework the garden layout so it looks like I'll have to move it. I don't want to prune it. It came in a square pot about 25cm tall, 15cm across. The dirt surrounding it was all brought in for the planting so it's quite soft. We're about to hit the worst of summer but I have to do it this weekend (or not at all). Do you think I can safely move this tree? How wide do you think that root ball would be now?

In six to eight weeks the root ball should not have grown much, leaf flushes occur after the plant saves up energy over a longer period of time so are not necessarily indicative of root growth. Some ideas to reduce breaking fragile new roots and aiding in recovery:

leave extra dirt around roots and get a sturdy cloth or plastic and slide it under the tree before lifting the tree and then carry in the cloth as a sling to the new position and slide out cloth operated like a slide sheet.

Mulch very well to retain moisture and erect a shade cloth if possible. Foliage feed with low concentration liquid feed twice a day and water the tree regularly.

If you wait until the new flush has time to harden it may also be less vulnerable good luck!
