Peter, nematodes are microscopic creatures that have a worm-like appearance and are sometimes called Eel- Worms. They exist in all sorts of environments and eat all sorts of things depending on the species. In soil, nematodes are usually present in abundance and many are beneficial as they help to break down organic matter and make nutrients available to plants. A few, however, are parasitic to plant root systems and these are probably the ones you are enquiring about. They cause lumps and deformities on the roots but I don't know how badly it effects crops; I get tomatoes every year and when my tomato plants have finished and I pull them out, the roots are definitely effected. They'd probably make root crops fairly unnattractive, though.
