nathan k starts with ... I have an old apple tree on the property and would like a few more just like it. I have started about 50 cuttings using 4 different methods hoping that some will turn out. Am i correct the once they root and i let them grow they will bear the same fruit as the parent tree? Also will the new trees be the same semi-dwarf size as the parent tree? | About the Author nathan k CHILTON 1st July 2014 3:47am #UserID: 10149 Posts: 1 View All nathan k's Edible Fruit Trees |
Mike Tr says... Cutting grown trees are genetically the same as the parent and will produce fruit that are the same. They can actually be smaller than a seedling or grafted parent as their root system develops differently. There will be no true tap root and more 'adventitious' roots so they need extra support while young and can get blown over more easily. | About the Author Mike Tr Cairns 1st July 2014 6:58am #UserID: 8322 Posts: 614 View All Mike Tr's Edible Fruit Trees |

BenW says... Apple cuttings are a bit iffy in my experience, although I believe some varieties will go. Air layering works well. So long as your cutting material is above any graft it should be identical to the parent, except for the size of the tree, which may be smaller as Mike said, but will probably be larger. Apples are easy enough to control with pruning anyway, especially if you start when they are small. The easiest way to propagate apples is to graft onto a rootstock, which is easier and far more successful than cuttings, with a more predictable outcome. | About the Author BenW Kinglake West,3757,VIC 1st July 2014 10:15am #UserID: 5390 Posts: 144 View All BenW's Edible Fruit Trees |
