Pawpaw - fertilisation

    2 responses

I have 2 Southern Red bisexual Pawpaw trees that are both fruiting nicely, fruit quality is good. I notice the seeds are smaller than shop pawpaws.

Questions:
1. What happens if I plant the seed from these fruit? Will they revert to non-bisexual? Be infertile?

2. I also have more recently planted a few female pawpaw trees a few meters away. Will they produce fruit by cross fertilising with my bisexual pawpaws?

I'm in Sydney which is of course not the ideal climate for pawpaws.
Thanks,
Dave

Answer Q/1 No, I don't think so, some might become male but unlikely.
Answer Q2 I would keep them as far apart as possible. Growing reds where you are, are a plus

Thanks Wayne,
I'm going to go ahead and plant seeds from my bisexual pawpaws and hopefully they'll be bisexual too. Anyway if the babies are not bisexual it will only take me about a year to know.
