A lady at the markets is selling pepper vine, and I am tempted to buy one - they look alot like pepperomia plants. Has anyone had any experience with this one?

Yeah, they are a vine. I saw a doco on them growing in India. You look like you're in the right location. I bought and sowed a full packet of whole peppercorns hoping one might get through the sterilizing process and germinate. But alas, not even one out of thousands germinated. The sterilizing processes they go through to be imported definately work.

If it is the real pepper that you use in the kitchen and make pepper steak from,I have a very productive vine(s) growing on a paw paw stump. It tastes better fresh and the vine is easy to propagate.Friends have clipped it mercilessly but it still has peppercorns on it.I could probably mail you a bit.Are there other herbs, spices or seeds you are chasing?

Mr urban I see you live in the hottest place north of Havana and pepper should survive.John Mc,I could have sent pepper if I knew you wanted some.
Mine is one of the finest commercial strains. To propagate forget seeds or basal stems, you need a runner internode with roots, planted and mollycoddled until it shoots.Mr Urban I can send propagation material and a selection including some of those requested above.John I can do it again next week with pepper if you are eager and include sweet leaf, krachai, west induan arrowroot and other red bisexual paw paws if you like,

BTW Copacabana is a suburb near me, 40mins south eastish of Gosford.

Yes If Mr Urban wanted to come over some time, I have a few mature citrus trees for some grafting material that he might be interested in. Especially several cv's of mandarin, valencia, kaffir lime seeds you sent and probably other stuff. I have a tripple grafted apple tree 10 years old and has never produced a single apple. I'm suspecting not cold enough.

Mike, do any of those gingers have a nice ornamental flower?

Posting grafting material from me of citrus is probably not a good idea. Many gingers are ornamental including a few native ones around here like backscratcher. Those I mentioned have small white flowers rather than the showy flowers of some gingers except for Z.zurumbet that has a red honeycomb near the ground.Galangal flowers are used in cooking.

John, I looked at you collection again and surprisingly I have more than 20 in common and grew quite a few of those ones before. It is good that you have a biew kiew longan and guy sam wampi.I won't send more herbs you already have.Babaco is probably one of the that I don't have that would survive up here.
This time the package will be fat due to the gingers, arrowroot and taros.I'll toss in some wax melon, sweet leaf, abiu and some proper red bisex paw paw seeds. The pepper might have to be stuffed down the edges. If there is romm I could stick in a few guava and chaoom cuttings.

I must put some time aside and update my edibles, it's getting a bit behind. I don't know what to say Mike, you're too generous. The least I can do is send up some large Babaco cuttings ready to strike. I recently acquired some hard to get Cocona seeds that have germinated and growing well. What about some Brazillian spinach? green ceylon spinach seed? pic pic? muscadine? yellow/red dragonfruit? cape gooseberry? I'll have some cherimoya seed available soon, I'm just waiting for them to ripen up, which, I've also promised Peter from SA a couple of ripe ones when they're ready.

John I have spoken to Lucy as well and will do a small swap.It is best to judge the value once you have it in hand and there may be casualties through the post.I'll have a scratch around tomorrow and see if anything else is there. There might only be small bits of a few things. I 've hacked out alot and I have a shorter leaner garden now.
If muscadine is the florida grape and cocona is the big non spiny naranjilla looking fruit then I'm interested.Brazil spinach would be worth a shot but cherimoya won't grow here and I have the rest except for pic pic which I have never heard of.

I am still very interested in the Chinese Licorice. Rather sending 2 parcels, I have got an idea that you send my licorice in Mike's parcel and I pick it up from Mike 's house at the end of July.

Hi Mike,

Is that ok with my idea?

Many thanks gentlemen.

Hi Mike,

I have what the Thai people call it yanang I bought the plant for $10 at the local market but not what I was after.
With this one, you just extract the juice (does not set) and cook with bamboo and some Thai food.
If you like I can send you some cuttings

http://www.simply-thai.com/Thai-Market_Thai_Herbs_and_Spices-bai_yanang.htm

What I am after is the vine (grass jelly) where you make jelly out of it. I bought the seeds in May and they have not come up yet. I will keep you posted.

people call Both of them Tiliacora triandra ?

Same with the large babaco cuttings. I'll chuck in some brazillian spinach and some red ceylon spinach seeds. Not sure if I have another cutting of chinese licorice, if so, i'll throw it in. I'll go for a walk around tomorrow morning and see what else I can find. Picpic is a miniture sugar cane from Papua New Guinea. It's not real sweet here, might go alright up there.

Yes, I got a small cutting a couple of years ago labeled "pic pic". The label was not easy to read, I took it as pic pic, never ever hearing of it before, and my fault for not chasing it up, but you're right, a quick google tells me it's pit pit, a small sugar cane from new guinea. Do you want me to include a cutting tomorrow?

Yes thanks John it would be better than the bamboo like varieties of sugarcane I tried. There will be quite a collection in the second parcel, perhaps a bit more top shelf than the last effort.I won't put an ID list in the express bag as will only be 2 rooted peppers and some vine. There will be 2 small abuis,a few solo paw paws,a sugar apple,a node of broad leaf kang kung and a WI arrowroot used as padding. It will test your horticultural skills to retain these 'support acts'.

Are they the whopping thai shallots you have or the purply/brown cloved small ones?

You can contact me via
coastalskylightatbigponddotcom. I'm usually going past your way at least once a week or you're more than welcome to come over, what ever is easiest. I'm at Warnervale, not far from the airport.
Tea is easily struck, it's a Camellia (chinensis). I don't have any but Bunnies at Gosford has some nice plants for around $8-$9.

No worries Mike ... I'll try sourcing the tea locally as per Johns instruction . You really are nice people, all of you . This is a cool forum. Really looking forward to the peppercorn and whatever else you were able to send ... I'm still learning to graft so it will be scary at first. I have the smaller purplish thai shallot which I propagated from a local organic market... They're still growing but let me know If you need some . I think I'll have more plants in general/growth in the next 6-12 months so hopefully I can return the favors . John I'll contact ya in the next couple days . Lets play it by ear , if it's ok I would love to see your range of plants and maybe learn a thing or two ... But I understand it may be more convienent to just drop off etc . Mike ... How do i view YOUR edibles ? Can see everyones but it doesn't have a link to your for some reason. thanks again

I love this link. It speaks how generous people can be.
I can't grow pepper vine in Sydney (can I?) so I won't ask for cuttings, but if anyone can part with some fresh pepper corns I would love to try some. Bit of a foodie. Will pay for them and postage, of course. My collection is pretty pathetic since I only have a container garden on a concrete car space but happy to share anything I have.

Yes Mary,
Mike's pepper vine arrived today and I immediately potted it up and it's now settled into my warm poly house. I'm more than happy to send you a cutting or fruit when it gets going. Mike also sent me a cutting for Mr Urban which is also potted up for him ready for delivery, so between us all we should be able to spread it around hopefully in the near future. It most definately does not like the cold.

Maybe summer would be a more sensible time to try and establish them.Should they pass away we can do it again in summer. They can be kept as an indoor plant for years before planting out.

I'll get a small poly house or indoor Mylar setup to help spread out my workspace as i'm renting . But i'm right on the coast it usually does stay a little warmer than Havana mike ;) I'm sure we can work out something Mary ... Just need to give it some time .

John, I received the box of goodies today and they are now potted and everything looks promising.I don't know what queen of herbs is but it looks great.I have sent out tentacles to get some really good stuff and with the swaps initiated on this forum I should be able to have a garden bristling with rare and glamorous fruit and veg. types.
I am pleased the 2nd parcel arrived with you and some of the contents will be of use. There is lots more soon to be at my disposal should you be in the market for further deliveries.Everything ever written about pit pit (duruka) has now passed before me and I'm very impressed.I have saved a prise position for it when it arrives.

You should be able to get probably three cuttings off one pit pit stalk. So I take it that I must send it off on the Monday of the 25th so it gets there before the 28th? Express usually gets there overnight anyway. If Lucy's not in a hurry I might as well keep her licorice here a bit longer til you get back home.

John, there is no rush and I did not want to sound demanding or difficult.I am keen on having some pit pit but when it is convenient for you also.I realise that it cost a bit sending a box of such large samples and an express bag before that.If there is anything that you are after in particular let me know.Maybe those brasilian guavas with the pineapple taste or mexican cream guava? I should have a couple good quality cutiings ready to go soon.

Mr Urban Orchard says...

Bunnings are out of the Camellia Sinensis ... I also researched another variety called Camellia assam ( tea leaf plant ;)

Dilemma : If i buy "viable" seed... which is hard enough to find or a seedling i still have to wait 3 years to harvest apparently ... where as a good cutting i assume, would be ready to go after a decent growing season. If you can help i am happy to pay postage. I've put the feelers out on different forums so don't stress ... just letting you guys know where i'm at. Didn't mean to hijack the thread by the way. i'm kicking myself for not thinking of this earlier ha

Andy you really want C.sinensis and you only missed the boat narrowly. If you can contain yourself for a little while and your feelers don't intercept tea cuttings in the short term I can try to strike some and send them along to either yourself or John.I will be a little indisposed in the next few weeks.Have you caught up with John yet? If your out there John thanks for the great cuttings.

Andy the cyberburley may attract a response.Around Nov/Dec I will have access to more seeds of good species that should do ok in NSW.Maprang or Apricot Mango is one such species and I will have mayon chid and giant sweet varieties. Those mystery guavas are also starting to shoot.Anyway, next time around put a wish list in.

Mike,
postage costs pale into insignificance. It's allways very exciting getting new horticultural material. Let me know when you're ready to receive your next parcel.

Andy,
I Think Wyee Nursery might have a couple of tea plants. I'll check for you next time I'm up there, might even be tomorrow. Don't stress too much, most nurseries have them most of the time. If you're comming up next W/E I could grab it for you. BTW, they have the best collection of fruit trees on the Central Coast, you might want to visit them after you've called in here.

John,
That would be great thanks.I think Lucy's husband will be coming over tomorrow or Monday so the Chinese licorice may miss her or her husband.
Pit pit (Saccharum edule) is the NG name and Duruka is the fiji name.If you just google duruka fiji, technical bulletin it gives a good overview and discusses varieties. You only eat the bunches of flowers like cauliflower and it taste like asparagus.

I got Lucy's package today and Lucy's stuff from me was picked up this afternoon by her husband. If you are out there Lucy the unlabelled extra stuff that Ian squeezed out of me was rambutan R134,Montong durian, longkong, maprang, mekong spinach vine and I don't have a name for the big ginger species. The taros are the two most expensive 'land' types.Just look at how the struck guava and pepper were done and copy but reclip the ends especially for hog plums. Thanks for your package also.

Hello again ... would you happen to have citronella Mike or John ? the real grass ? ( apparently it is tricky to tell it from lemongrass ). I gotta be careful not to go to exotic but it surprises me how much i can safely fit into my yard without upsetting my neighbours ;) so if you can accommodate that i would be real happy .... i think you said you have Neem , tea plant , Cacao ? ( i have one seedling still alive but might need a couple backups. definately will need a greenhouse later on ... a big one ! ) thanks again ... maybe easier for you to just send to john if thats cool with John that is .

Andy, I had citronella grass and cacao but got rid of them as they are not real useful and citronella is not really like lemongrass.I have neem and tea and as I said before when I get a few extra items worth sending and more time I'll send a decent package to John with some of your species in as well.

It might be stupid to get rid of so many fruit trees and plants and keep replacing them so as to have just the best ones.I really only want a great soncoya, canistel, wax apple and jackfruit to complete the fruit trees.Maybe a jujube from lucy would be good but it might be too warm for a chinese one and the excellent thai ones are banned. The pit pit from john seems like an excellent vegetable and if it survives will be a prized addition to my vegie patch. There are just a few hard to get vegies I would like. Tropical garlic and asparagus and even a sicana. They are all in the works and may happen.

Hi Mike,
Some bad news with the pepper vines you sent me, they got hit with frost and are not happy at all! It's been a long winter here. (good for my garlic tho!:-)
I've moved them to a warmer place and just hope they survive!
Thanks again for sending them, just wondering if you have any spare plants if mine die? (say next month maybe?).

No worries Brendan but there are no more rooted ones. They are not big fans of frost, especially when establishing and prefer warm humid weather when striking.I don't know if Johns cuttings pulled through.Maybe in the next couple of weeks would be ok as it should take off soon with the return of warm weather. There is only so much pepper you can consume and I haven't bothered establishing more than one clump.

My cacao was struggling through winter and at the 11th hour before warm weather ... it has lost it's last leaf ... not sure if it's dead or not. probably is. I would love to pop round again John Mc to see if some of the things i wanted are ready due to it warming up ... if your still cool ...maybe next week ?

Hey Andy,
it's a bit early for non-deciduous cuttings, so we have plenty of time before anything would be ready for propagating just yet. I have heaps of seed from my very delicious loquat tree if you were interested.
Oh, and I just received a tropical sunshu nashi from Daley's today. Can't wait for that one to start fruiting.
Sounds scrumptious
-------
"A superior low chill nashi suitable for subtropical areas, a vigorous selection that is self pollinating and will be highly productive within 2-3 years. The delicate beige speckled skin is attractive, the flesh is white, crisp and crunchy and melts in the mouth. Delicious eaten straight off the tree"

That's great Andy, don't forget to cover them with the organza bags for some protection, hey? If you only need a few, they are available at any $2 shop.
I've had the odd flower on both my triple grafted and dwarf ballerina but no fruit set. There's more flowers comming so there might be some hope yet.
As apposed to the pear tree I planted around 15 years ago, it's loaded for the first time. Just goes to show it loves water. I'm hoping it's the Williams cultivar to help pollinate the newly acquired Nashi's.
