Pinto peanut as ground cover

    4 responses

I'm considering growing pinto peanut as a ground cover and cover crop. Is it a good idea? Is it easy to kill pinto peanut plants with round up, just in case I may want to kill them in the future? (I could not kill English ivy with round up, and I don't want another like it in the garden )

They can build up to a thick mat in some soils. It is worth trying out under a few trees so not too big a job if they dont suit. Its wise to have some ground cover as bare soil can dry out heckova fast. At least pintos help with nitrogen.

I recently did a ground cover mix for my whole front yard after removing the lawn and digging in a lot of mushroom compost. I planted the following:
White Clover
Red Clover
Lucerne Sequel
Barrel Medic
Mung Beans
Buckwheat
Cowpea
Nasturtium Jewel Mix
Marigold Gem Mix
Woolly Pod Vetch
Oats
Japanese Millet
French White Millet
Wynn's Cassia
Sunflowers

There are a some of photos of the progression attached. It has done wonders for the soil as it was quiet sandy and did not hold moisture. Now it stays cool and moist if we do get rain. I just come through once every couple of weeks and do a chop and drop.

To Denise, I will grow pinto peanut in small areas to see how I manage. Thanks
To waterfall, it is a Good idea for cover crop. I am looking for a uniform look ground cover 😀 so probably white and red clover are good enough.

Looking back I regret planting the millet grasses as I could only do a chop and drop and they grow too tall which shades the others out and then go to seed.

They are excellent as green manure though as they produce a bulk amount of organic matter in a very short time.

Everything else on my list has been great, very pretty to look at too.
