Plants not fruiting

We bought 2 sea grape plants and a papaya about 3 years ago. The papaya was a male and we finally got rid of it but the sea grapes are growing well but have not flowered and fruited. We are very disappointed

Hi Moni,

You have purchased plants that require both male and female pollination. Which means that there is a 50% chance that they will be male or female. Unless you have both the male and female plants then you need to understand that you will not get fruit until you get the right combination.

For example if you look under the Plant Information and specifications of the sea grape here:
http://www.daleysfruit.com.au/fruit%20pages/sea%20grape.htmit says:
Is Pollination Required?
Yes M&F

When purchasing just 2 sea grapes the chances of getting 1 male and 1 female is the same as flipping a coin twice. Best to get at least 3 or more to increase your chances. If you wanted fruit. If you are growing them just for their foliage then this does not matter.

You only know their sex when they flower.

In relation to pawpaws there are quite a few varieties that are bisexual for example the southern red pawpaw has an 80% chance of being bisexual meaning you only need 1 pawpaw tree to fruit.

It isn't 100% but much closer.

Unfortunately this is just part of growing fruit trees when trying to get these varieties to fruit.

There are lots of fruit trees that are self pollinating and only need 1 plant to fruit. However if you are specifically growing these types of plants that require Male and Female to get fruit it is much more difficult and you need to increase your chances of having success.

This goes for dates, Kiwi fruit and many other Male & Female pollinators.
