Prickly Boysenberries

    9 responses

I had good producing boysenberries in Vic. & thankfully the canes where virtually free of prickles except for the odd one. I saw them for sale in Bunnings , Busso the other day but they were prickly just like blackberry canes! Anyone know why?

Boysenberries have a lot of small but nasty prickles. As far as I know there aren't any thornless ones in Australia. I'd love it if someone proved me wrong. SG are you sure they weren't loganberries or some such?

Lachlann, when I was given cuttings a few years back I was told they were from a boysenberry & always believed it.
Now I know your description is far more likely. Thanks!
What ever they were they were a cinch to harvest with delicious large black berries. I will look out for loganberries!

Another distinguishing factor is time of ripening. Loganberries are first off the rank - October-November. Easy to grow and pleasant to eat but a slightly smaller and tarter than some other varieties. Others - I'm no expert!
I'm trying a Daleys Keriberry at present. Two years old and just coming into flower now, I did want an autumn-winter berry, but this south Asian plant is a prickly monster that sends out two metre laterals like a giant octopus.

sg, you must not have the horrible hot easterlies we have around Perth. My boysenberries did well here, but were ripening just as the e. winds came. They just dried up and I never had a sweet one. Boo hoo!

Oh thats no good Julie, youre having a bad trot! I was in Sth West Vic then & the only nasties were North winds! I was on a pure bore water without any iron so could keep the orchard very green & lush.

Hi I was just wondering if it was possible the clippings were from cross ponination and you have an undiscovered variety?
