The oranges on my tree get 3 to 4 slits in there skins before there even near full size or ripe

Citrus skin is formed early on in the fruits' life. Adverse conditions (eg not enough water) at this early stage can lead to skin failure later in the fruits' growth.
Perhaps this is what happened?
