snottiegobble starts with ... Long time no post, sorry everyone! Lately I thought I would try growing some blueberries in large pots & so started off with a Blue Rose, then got a Denise to improve pollination! I was enclined to believe that getting the right potting mix acidic enough would be my only concern, but now I realise there are varieties for cold winters/warm summers, mild winters/ hot summers,Low bushes, High bushes, Rabbit eye bushes, early to mid, mid to late & that most of them need pollination from varieties within their OWN group! I purposely bought a tall rab eye named CLIMAX this week from Bunnings thinking it would be easy to find a cross pollinator, but no luck so far.If anyone knows of any I am near Busselton WA. Thanks! | About the Author snottiegobble South of Bunbury 25th August 2014 12:21am #UserID: 3468 Posts: 1458 View All snottiegobble's Edible Fruit Trees |
Tommoz says... Premier is the standard polliniser for Climax, but it's not commonly found. Also 'Austin' but I doubt that is in Australia. Not true about the different groups, all can be pollen donors but they have to bloom at the same time. Unfortunately Blue Rose and Denise are high chill and really not ideal for your climate. Also avoid Northland and Brigitta. Misty and Sharpblue are a great low-chill pair. Sorry can't help you with bloom time info, but Climax is supposed to be early. | About the Author Tommoz Dural 25th August 2014 12:47am #UserID: 7219 Posts: 340 View All Tommoz's Edible Fruit Trees |

Tommoz says... I don't think moving them will help. Wind chill is different from chill hours (purely temperature). You also want a fair amount of sunlight. Yeah you learn the hard way, but you might still get some fruit. The Northern highbush types are the best varieties apparently and are popular in cold Victoria where the blueberry heartland is and where the plants originate. | About the Author Tommoz Dural 25th August 2014 1:33am #UserID: 7219 Posts: 340 View All Tommoz's Edible Fruit Trees |
