rtdrury starts with ... Hi. I saw Trikus' forum posts but didn't find how to identify Rollinia flower sex. My tree is probably 3 years old. All the flowers are falling off before setting fruit. They all look the same before falling off: After they lose their three wings, I see a small bulb that is smooth, except for the 1/3 to 1/2 of the bulb at the tip end I see a tiny honeycomb. It seems each cell of this honecomb might have had a tiny stamen (pollen producer) that has turned brown and fallen off. Can I expect that all flowers look this way after shedding their petals? The flowers are not separately male/female but rather every flower is both male and female but at different times, right? This would mean that pollen may be harvestedd for any flower given the correct time of day, and then applied to any flower give the correct time of day, right? And if I break off one of the petals to see inside, I might be able to observe at which time the flower is male or female? Without breaking off a petal, I can't imaging how I can tell the sex, except that pollen falls when male. How best to tell when it's male and when female? I actually have not found the photos online yet that tell me definitely how to identify when male/female. Markmelb says... So far from your comment youve worked it out - This is what Annonas do - Female 1st Day open a small amount(smells sweet) 2nd Day Male open all the way - next day or so petals fall off. I havnt found any Rollinia YouTube Vids but theres plenty on Custard Apples & Cherimoyas - if you find one on Rollinia let me know - would be cool also to see your M/F stage pics as mine could flower this summer - if yours is flowering first time as it sounds, show pic of position on branch? Also one of whole plant for size reference & Age? | About the Author Markmelb MOUNT WAVERLEY,3149,VIC 23rd December 2016 12:58pm #UserID: 7785 Posts: 1192 View All Markmelb's Edible Fruit Trees |

rtdrury says... Thanks. I found a flower today in its male phase and was able to shake pollen out of it, surprisingly large grains. Earlier in the day the flower was less open, and I saw a honeycomb covering the front 1/3 of the bulb inside. I wonder if that honeycomb is the female pistil. I only have a coupe of flowers left this season. I will try to put that pollen into the next open flower. I suspect the tree may be not making enough flowers for a female to be open the next day after a male. | About the Author rtdrury Central Florida, USA, zone 9a/9b 25th December 2016 11:41am #UserID: 15250 Posts: 3 View All rtdrury's Edible Fruit Trees |
Markmelb says... The grains you see are the (edit) Anthers - pollen is very fine dots. If you tap into an old 35mm black film canister (if you can still find one) you can easily see pollen. will survive a day or so in fridge. This year I may try freezing as Im having same issue with not enouggh flowers early in summer. Cant wait till my Rollinia flowers. | About the Author Markmelb MOUNT WAVERLEY,3149,VIC 27th December 2016 11:01pm #UserID: 7785 Posts: 1192 View All Markmelb's Edible Fruit Trees |

rtdrury says... I broke one of the three wings off my last flower of the season after I found it partly open today. I think partly open means it's in the female phase. The bulb inside had the usual front honeycomb cap but this time the bulb (behind the honeycomb front) also appeared honeycomb, whereas with previous flowers the bulb appeared not honeycomb but full of small fuzzy hairs. This may be an intermediate phase, but cannot be the male phase because that has the pollen anthers surrounding the bulb. I have no pollen collected so this flower will not fruit. I still don't know which is the female pistil, the honeycomb front or the bulb behind it, but I cannot imagine the honeycomb front being the female pistil because the number of cells seems too small to account for all the knobs on a typical developed fruit. | About the Author rtdrury Central Florida, USA, zone 9a/9b 2nd January 2017 10:37am #UserID: 15250 Posts: 3 View All rtdrury's Edible Fruit Trees |
