The only explanation I can think of is not enough water, but that would depend on the species. Coronata needs lots of water, less is needed for the others.

Usually don't hold first year, mine didn't. They do like their water, they usually live near creeks.
Don't worry if they lose their leaves, or they go dry and brittle, always grow new ones.

My Ficus coronata 3m tall has been producing for 3 years now. A heavy load of fruit appears in mid winter but most drop before ripening even though it gets some water most days. But still we get about 2 litres of fruit, so it is still worth it.
