Sapodilla and Sour Sop

    6 responses

My Sapodilla came with black under the leaves but my Soursop was fine. After the recent wind and 'Antarctic front' both look like they have suffered. The Sapodilla is dropping leaves and the Soursop leaves look 'wind burnt'. They have had a fungicide spray. My question is two fold. Have I lost both? Or, will the leaves drop and then regrow? I have never grown these trees before.

Thanks.

I don't grow sapodilla but I do have a soursop and have done a lot of reading on growing them, mostly because I am trying to grow one in Sydney with the aid of a greenhouse in winter.

They are very tropical, other growers tell me they will drop leaves at about 5 - 6 degrees C and will be dead at 4 C. I'm not sure what temperatures you have had up there but this may be the reason plus there me be some transport shock depending on where they came from.

Best thing would be to keep them out of wind and hope they bounce back in spring.

Got down to 5 at my place last week waterfall, soursop didn't skip a beat. Frost free location though. Rollinia didn't handle it so well, which was surprising as I'd have though the reverse would have been true.

My Rollinia which is currently in the greenhouse with the soursop has started dropping its leaves too, maybe its just a time of year thing?

Well, the big one ( 4M) hasn't dropped any leaves, but the ones at 1m have. I guess they get more resilient to colder temps as they get larger. Winter fruits are poor quality and are best pruned off--don't take the quality of these as any indicator of potential if you get a few. They are usually quite small (about the size of tennis balls).

I've seen a few big (3- metre) soursops for sale on a market and they had no leaves at all, only a few fruit.

The coldest night that i can remember was 13 celcius in Bangkok but maybe those tree's came from elsewhere.

My small soursop also died during that cold spell but i guess i overwatered it.

Thank you for the responses. It only got down to around 8C but even though they are not exposed the wind was wicked in Brisbane.
I really hope they bounce back.
