Don’t waste your time trying to grow from seed as you may have to wait for years to crop and production may be variable. Buy a grafted or cutting grown plant with good soil preparation with plenty of compost. I have a 25 year old tree in Brisbane suburbia (cutting grown) that has grown like a weed and is currently 5m tall and always produced delicious purple fruit from 3 years after planting.

I intend to grow star apple from seed as an ornamental tree as I knew green variety in Vietnam would take 8 years to fruit. I am waiting for Daley to sell their grafted philipine gold trees because there are no other places that I know, sell them.

Hi Thithi

There have been various types of Star Apples in the shops here in Springvale for the past 2 or 3 months - I have been eating a lot but I just throw away the seeds.

Which variety did you get? The current ambient temperatures may not be high enough for them to germinate so I would recommend using a heated propagating mat if you have one.

Also in the shops currently they have Sapodillas and Yellow Water Melons (Mountain Sweet?)- photos taken today.
Cheers!

I bought star apples at $25 a kg, the most expensive fruit that I ever had. There was only one shop in st Albans sold them, no idea what cultivar but they were green. I also didnot see sapodilla sold in footscray or st Albans.

I put the seeds directly under central heating vent, hope that is enough to germinate star apple seeds. Well at least it worked for the jackfruit seeds that I germinated in July.

Hi Thithi

I think that you have been ripped off. The shops in Springvale and Keysborough have all types of Star Apples for around $8 - $9/kg.

They have had purple ones, large green variety and now some pinkish brown ones.

I prefer the flavour of the purple ones but the green ones have more flesh and may grow better here. Cheers.

Hi linton,
Yes I think I was ripped off too, but it was the only shop that sold star apples. It was $6.50 a star apple and it did not taste that good :(
Probably I would need to go to springvale. On what street are those shops? I am not familiar with springvale area. Hopefully I could buy a few rare fruits.

Hi Thithi

There are various Asian grocery and fruit shops in Springvale market, Springvale South shopping centre, and Parkmore Shopping Centre in Keysborough.

I think the best one is in Parkmore but the stock changes almost daily so they might have something one day and it is gone the next. You just have to be there at the right time. They had some very large purple star apples a few days ago, the best I've seen down here. Cheers.
