toolangi delight potatoes

    17 responses

Diana starts with ...
Have any Brisbane gardeners seen this variety in a market (or anywhere?). It seems that Green Harvest won't have any ready for this year's planting season. Everywhere else I can find to order it is in NSW or Victoria and will not deliver to Qld for quarantine reasons.

Strange that I can't find this locally bred variety, which is the best performing floury potato by far where I am.

Thanks,

Diana.

Toolangi delight is not a local (QLD)variety. It originated from the Vic Govt research station at Toolangi VICTORIA.

Oh- I was getting confused with Glen Large garlic (which I did manage to order).

Not much luck with royal blue here, but Toolangi delight has been very productive and disease free for me.

I will have to look at random markets if no-one knows a specific one.

Diana, there's a small chance you might find that variety in a stock produce/rural supplies store - seed potatoes can often be found in them, especially if they're in a more rural/outlying suburb.

Interestingly for some of you folk who know me, my brother developed the Toolangi Delight potato at the research station in Toolangi (Vic) - the short-sighted goverment has now shelved the whole program after decades of work.

That's such a shame Phil. It seems to have happened to so many good research programs.

Unfortunately Goodman seeds is one of those based in NSW (no selling to Qld). I don't understand how it works, because we get potatoes in the shops that say grown in NSW (or Victoria), and I have ordered seed potatoes from suppliers here that came in Goodman seeds packets (e.g. last year's toolangi delight from Green Harvest).

I should have stored some from last year.

That is a shame Phil, unfortunately many government decisions are made for short term money and convenience reasons and commonsense doesn't enter into it.
Delightful however to know yuor brother is just as interested in gardening as you are , must be in the genes!

Diana, it sounds the same as Aqis, go figure. If you email me I may be able help

I`ve been there to the Toolangi R S. & was given some new cultivars to try! That would be about 10 years ago & its a damned shame they are closed down. One of the tastiest spuds ever!

There were some truly colourful varieties being trialled, I don't know if anyone is saving the genetic material, it can take ten years from pollination to get a new variety to market availability.

I am very happy that this year I have succeeded in getting some Toolangi delight potatoes from Diggers in July (they can send potatoes to Queensland, I thought they couldn't in the past, but it might have been the timing). Three months ago would have been ideal, but now is still great.

I am going to try to keep them going so I have some to plant earlier next year (I'm not sure how best to do that).

I have a new plan this year. I am going to grow these potatoes until they die from humidity, then plant the little tubers in pots, and do this repeatedly to keep them going until April when I can plant them properly in the garden. So far this is working- these are the tubers from the first generation that has died back

Sounds like a good plan, Diana. And nice clean tubers there. I harvested my first Tooli yesterday, will replant ASAP after curing and a quick chit. The yield was less than expected but high setting tubers were a nice surprise, which points to potential for deep bag culture with seed-crowding. I'll keep replanting mine until their vigour declines, which I believe happens about generation six (G6) in many varieties, and I suppose the Goodman seed was G3, which seems common. After that... I will try another source, G1 or G2.

The plot photos here were taken 5th Feb (at 8wks old) and 14th Feb, the several Tooli of that first planting are front of row, bottom left of frame. They turned out to be the quickest of eleven vars.

Hi Diana, I’m interested to learn how you went with growing Toolangi Delights? I know this was a few years ago but I’m a Toolangi local and desperate to source some to grow myself. No one seems to have any anymore, even the potato research station up here. Look forward to hearing from you.
Regards, Adam
