Tough beans

Why are my dwarf beans so tough and stringy? They are Windsor longpod. Is it something lacking? Not very productive either.

Hi Julie, I'd say they're lacking Boron (borax, same thing).

Thanks Brendan - I'll have to go by what it says on the packet, if I still have the original packet.

I had a look at images for plant deficiencies, and the leaves look nothing like boron deficiency - they are quite healthy.

I did find this though:

http://burke.ces.ncsu.edu/index.php?page=news&ci=LAWN+22

"Extremely hot temperatures while the bean is forming on the vine can cause a certain amount of toughness. High temperatures can also interfere with pollination which can result in tough beans'.

As it has been very hot recently (high 30's) perhaps that is the reason. The beans in the shops are maybe grown down south where it is a little cooler.

Hi Julie :) I don't know - but I did find my beans went quite tough in the warm weather...I only grow them in winter here now. Maybe it's the variety?

(oh - just read the above post..snap!? :D

I have had better success with an heirloom variety (dragons tongue or maybe rattlesnake...) I can send U seed?

I grew a 'modern' type at the same time - and it was woody despite the same care. I had to pick them very small once the weather warmed up.

(still waiting on the Bauhinia galpini - BTW - haven't forgotten u)

Gosh, you have a good memory amanda! I had completely forgotten, but would still like some seed if you ever have some.

I was always under the impression that beans were a hot weather plant - you are always advised not to sow them too soon in spring. Confusing!

Hey Julie :) Will do...have to wait a whole year for those seeds - but I have heaps of flowers on my little toughies so it won't be long now!

I thought beans were warm season too...but I tried 3yrs in a row with little success. This year I winter planted and had a great crop..they went a bit tough later into spring.

I wonder if they would do better for you in autumn and spring perhaps? It's worth a try maybe...
