Autumn is a great time to be planting. Soil is still warm so roots will establish before cold sets in. Maqui likes it cool and damp. It hates very hot days without water..

Carl I couldn't give my Maqui the conditions it required and lost them all. It was just too hot and dry for them to survive here. I now have my dam excavated and am tempted to give them another try in a cooler location. At Bunnies, no one knows what they are so I'll wait till they go out on sale for $5ea and buy them up and definitely give them another go.
As far as pruning is concerned, I think they only need a tidy up, no rhyme or reason, I shortened the long wispy branches to strengthen the main trunk.
