Tree to identify

Ian Down to Earth starts with ...
Can anyone confirm what tree species this is? I suspect it's a candlenut, but cant seems to get the leaves matched up. Growing near Byron Bay. Thanks

The trunk, bark and leaves look like Quercus acutissima (Sawtooth Oak) to me, although the bumpy shell pieces don't seem match the acorn.
Did you crack the nut? It would pay to check it out when it flowers and see what the fruit is like when it's fresh.

Thanks, i suspect you're right. I was also told it might be a walnut, but i've not seen a walnut with leaves like this before, nor heard of them growing this far north..

Here's some more pictures of the flowers and the old nut i cracked- it still had an old nut inside which was very oily. No distinct smell to report..

Hi Ian, the flower catkins also look very much like a Sawtooth Oak, but I'm still not positively bowled over on the nut. It may well be, but I wouldn't wager as much on the nut as I would with the rest of the tree. Sorry that's not a 100% confirmed answer.
