Upper mountains starts with ... Does anyone know which tropical/subtropical fruit tree can be grown in a pot and brought inside in winter? I mean fruit trees and avocado, cinnamon, vanilla, papaya, etc. How big would the pot have to be? We are in the mountains so the demands on a hot summer cannot be fulfilled either. | About the Author loewenzahn Katoomba 6th June 2014 8:00am #UserID: 8357 Posts: 60 View All loewenzahn's Edible Fruit Trees |
BenW says... I'm in the Kinglake Ranges north of Melbourne. I currently have Coffee, Bananas,Brazillian Cherry, Black Sapote, avocados, a mango, a couple of babaco and a Pineapple (with a ripening fruit) in my loungeroom window. They survive quite happily in 30cm square water saver pots and I have had good flushes of growth in previous winters. Barring the Pineapples and possibly brazillian cherry they aren't likely to fruit inside. They are more being grown on to either plant in a sheltered spot or in my planned greenhouse. You can get dwarf varieties of some of those and I see no reason they wouldn't fruit for you in a large pot, especially if they can spend summer in a warm sunny spot outside. | About the Author BenW Kinglake West,3757,VIC 7th June 2014 6:09pm #UserID: 5390 Posts: 144 View All BenW's Edible Fruit Trees |

BenW says... I have a bacon growing outside too. Not worried even by snow :) The avocados I have inside flower but they are too little to set fruit. Really, most things should fruit in pots given proper care and a bit of time. I doubt my window is sunny enough for most things to really thrive and the pots I used aren't really big enough to grow then to that stage. Given a sunny north facing window and larger pots you would probably find most things are worth a try. | About the Author BenW Kinglake West,3757,VIC 8th June 2014 1:05am #UserID: 5390 Posts: 144 View All BenW's Edible Fruit Trees |
Upper mountains says... I think I will try more next spring in the ground winters seem to get so warm recently. If you start a fruit tree in a pot do you start it in spring when it can be put outside or at any time (when it is on the market)? Which avocados are best in pots? I saw fig trees in pots they are doing very well, better than mine in the ground. | About the Author loewenzahn Katoomba 17th June 2014 1:04pm #UserID: 8357 Posts: 60 View All loewenzahn's Edible Fruit Trees |
