Virus free banana tree enquiry

    2 responses

Ross starts with ...
I have been growing 2 small patches of lady finger banana trees successfully for the past 8 years on a suburban block in Brisbane however over the past 18 months the trees have wilted and new pups get to a half size then die back and are partly black in the trunks when cut. I have had the Qld Primary Industries out to inspect the trees 4 weeks ago and taken samples for laboratory testing. The officers were very helpful but were not a position to give any advice whether they were diseased. They also took photos to email off to Tully banana research station. While waiting for a response I was wondering if anyone is in a position to answer my query.
If I was to purchase virus free trees from a commercial retailer would these new
plants contract the potential virus if I planted them next door to the existing trees or would I have to completely remove the existing material on my property before I committed to new trees at $39 per tree?

Could be borers getting into the stool , or [ and most likely] your soil is just all flogged out ! 8 years growing bananas ! they are gross feeders , would be surprised if anything left in the soil after that time . Here commercial growers will rest a block with legumes and sugar cane after only 3-4 years of bananas .

Sometimes if a clump is left alone for years without culling, they will get choked up and may look very unthrifty and competing for water. It is wise to also alternate the growing site about every 5 years. They need lots of potassium.
