Walnut tree

I was attempting to identify the growth which has appeared on my troubled walnut tree and the images shown in web examples of Aphyllophorales suggest it might be a Split-Gill (schizophyllaceae)

My problem is I bought the tree with the house about thirty years ago, healthy fruit bearing (about two buckets each year) and a canopy about 15m, (50ft).

Over the last few years one or two large limbs have died and these rows of fungus appear on them but I'm unsure of which came first. Does the fungus kill the branch? or grow on the dead wood which may have been killed by something else?

I only have about one third of a tree left for summer shade and cannot find any deciduous equivalent, so I would like to save the tree if I can. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated!

Thanks Max

Hi Max - I found this great site:

www.mushroomobserver.org

If u join up (free) and log your photos there are heaps of people who enjoy identifying them for u! It's really interesting.

Otherwise Speedy will probably know what they are.

It's funny you say that Amanda, cause that fungus sort of can eat you...
It's been known to cause basidioneuromycosis in humans, so don't go sniffing it Max.
I don't think it's too big a deal if you're in good health, but why tempt fate eh?

Thanks Speedy for getting back to me and thanks to Amanda also for following it up.
Just my luck to get something so common and threatening too!

My problem is I have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis since 1989 and use a wheel chair. My immune system is lower than most so I am unable to either dig it out myself, or as a pensioner pay someone two months income to remove it, and it is literally growing outside my back door!!

Best I can hope for is a misguided missile to napalm the tree without touching the house, never know your luck in a big city eh!

Cheers,Max

Hi Max - sorry to hear about your diagnosis....there must b someone who can help u? try your local council? My aunty gets 2 hrs free gardening on a regular basis thru some pensioner program in Perth. That tree looks like it's very close to your house also.
I hope u have some luck...try asking around - there might b some one who can at least come n spray it 4 u.

Max,
if you were a bit closer I could come over and take it down for you.
I've been wanting to get to Adelaide for some time now,
so when I do maybe I'll throw the chainsaw into the back of the ute.
how tall is the tree?

Sounds like you would all be great neighbours instead of the bogans with band practice. Thank you everyone for your input; I contacted the Botanic Gardens but everyone has become so specialised the tree specialist doesn;t know about fungi and the fungi person doesn't deal with trees etc. I'll give the council a ring tommorrow and see how it goes; and Speedy if you do come to Adelaide I live 30mins away from 54 wineries and have my own chainsaw, though it's not needed for Cellar door entry.

Hey Max... I have seen distinct personality changes happen in men when they get a chainsaw in their hands (bless 'em) ...maybe the bogans next door could be useful..??? :))) It's worth a try!?

OK Max I'll let you know before I come over... just in case the 'Bogans next door' haven't helped you out in the mean time.
And I think the wineries will have to be AFTER the chainsaw thing or it could get messy.
I dont faint at the sight of blood but I haven't tested my mettle on 'severed limbs while drunk!' LOL :-)
