Wampee frit disappearing

    10 responses

davewastech starts with ...
My yeem pay wampee tree is now fruiting for its second season. Initially there was a lot of baby fruit, but recently most seem to have vanished. There's not many on the ground.
There's still fruit at the top of the tree (see photo), but those lower down the tree have almost all disappeared. (photo)
Any ideas what's going on?
(possums, bats, birds - haven't seen any of these marauding it)

Oops typo - title should read "Wampee fruit disappearing"

Thanks
- Dave

Wonderful, rather complex citrus taste. Fruited after 2 years. Several seeds inside each fruit. All the fruit ripened at the same time. But we only had a very small number of fruit because it was the tree's first season. (February 2013, then no fruit in 2014). Bought it as a seedling from Daleys.

The fruit was tasted by four of us, and we had all previously tasted wampee of unknown varieties years ago in Asia. All of us pronounced this better tasting than those we had tasted in Asia. (Two of these guys have since planted their own Yeem Pays in Sydney).

Great to hear Dave. I snatched up an advanced tree from Daleys a few months ago and am quietly hopeful of a small crop next season. It is growing very well in its new home.

Hi Helina,
Mine was planted in the ground from a very small pot from Daleys in Nov 2012, and it's now about 2.5m high.
It fruited in Feb 2014 and again in Feb 2016 (skipped a year). I believe that they just fruit about February in Sydney. ie flower about December
So yours has never fruited?

Hi Dave, I believe my father pruned it because it was getting too high, could this be the reason? It's got amazing strong growth since being in my care but no signs of flowers yet, seeing your tree gives me some hope for this coming December :) Haven't ate this fruit before and dying to try it, I purchased it thinking it was going to be duku tree and have recently learnt its a wampee :)

My Yeem Pay taste great. In 2014 I had zero pests. 2016 crop about 50% damaged by Qld fruit fly. In future I will net the tree in summer. But in Perth you have a different fruit fly (Mediterreanean fruit fly) and I don't know if they will affect your crop.

The dukus I have often eaten in Indonesia also taste great, but it is a native of Sumatra (on the Equator) and is a very tropical tree, so I would be surprised if it could be grown successfully as far south as Perth. But the wampee is just sub-tropical and can tolerate cooler weather, certainly they look healthy in Sydney's climate all year round.

My son has a healthy Wampi in EDEN NSW even further south than Sydney. We tried our first fruit this year from our grafted Guy Sam Wampi, "wow what an intense taste" It is strongly aromatic and tastes a lot like the leaves smell, a bit like citron/etrog peel plus sweetness. I would not want to eat to many at once, but keep coming back to the tree for another taste. It is a great novelty taste for visitors and the response is highly varied, some love it some think its gross.I am tempted to grow a Yeem Pay as well.

Hi Allybanana,
Did you have any problem with fruit fly?

I was also considering to plant a Guy Sam to complement my Yeem Pay. But I was wondering if they might cross pollinate?

btw wampi grow very easily from the seed
