Thithi starts with ... I have 2 types of avocados grow in the garden, wurtz and bacon solely because of their cold hardiness. Someone in the forum said wurtz doesn't taste that good. Recently I ate bacon avocado. Well I thought avocados taste more or less the same. However bacon probably is not going to be my favorite. Im planning to grow another avocado variety, this time based on taste. Would you tell me what is your favorite avocado? Thithi says... Thank markmelb, Jason, Wish I had read these before I bought my avocados. I really like to grow reed, lamb hass sound good as well. Geez, I like to grow Shepard too because the fruit doesnot turn brown markmelb, Daleys does not sell mexicola. Last year I bought wurtz from master, and bacon fr bunnings. Where would buy you avocado? There s a lot of varieties that daley does not carry. | About the Author Thithi Deer park 9th July 2014 11:22pm #UserID: 10139 Posts: 193 View All Thithi's Edible Fruit Trees |
Jason says... Mark do you ever get below zero?. Just saying because I wouldnt imagine you ever see temps where that would even be a factor for you in Melbourne. By the way I looked at the fruit on my Bacons and they are about half grown, like 5.5cm x 4cm as of now, so still tiny. Still outright cold isn't an issue for me. My garden has never seen less than minus 2.5c and when its only for a couple hours that's nothing even for the very frost sensitive Avocados. The advantage I have with the long ripening is that varieties like Bacon end up very oily and rich. Here its much like Hass except with a stronger Avocado taste, my wife prefers it over Hass. For me Reed easily beats them all for a few reasons. I like that it doesn't set so many fruit that the tree gets stressed (this happens with Hass), yet it still sets a lot (it's very balanced).. I like the mild boiled egg flavour, I like that it seems very low in histamine when ripe and is easy on my gut. I also really like that the fruit are giant, because it's a proper enough size to share. | About the Author Jason Portland 10th July 2014 1:47am #UserID: 637 Posts: 1217 View All Jason's Edible Fruit Trees |

Markmelb says... Hi Jason - Truffle festival on at Caulfield Racecourse Melb this weekend -you might be interested to attend will be there on Saturday? Also your quite correct - never seen temps where my Avos are much below zero - but the car roof out front was minus 2.5c last year took a photo of it. That nursery near Santa Cruz sometimes gets quite extremes some winters yet their pinkerton seem to recover - he talks about a good fertilizing regime to help sustain them - did you read his blog experiment and results from a cold winter period - worth a read My only Reed fruit started looking a bit wrinkly not plump - wasnt sure if it was lack of water as reduce watering thru winter with the potted ones - its leaves look fine no witing etc - its already budding up to flower at same stage as Lamb Hass in the ground - need to talk to you about Mexicola stock - Linton has my number if youve chatted to him - cheers ps - check out garden on gardenworld blog fyi | About the Author Markmelb , 10th July 2014 8:06am #UserID: 7785 Posts: 1192 View All Markmelb's Edible Fruit Trees |

Jason says... PS I won't be going anywhere for a while. I'm on a eight month course of expensive drugs that I had to pay for myself to try get my immune system controlled. Good news is I have enhanced powers to garden :p. Sternus, all mine are in the ground. I get the biggest crops by far on Hass though, then Reed, the Bacon.. Well kind of get more than Bacon on Rincon but its not a good fruit so I don't eat them. Lots of varieties won't fruit well here so recently I only plant type A trees. Would be very happy if I knew a Summer ripening type A. | About the Author Jason Portland 10th July 2014 1:11pm #UserID: 637 Posts: 1217 View All Jason's Edible Fruit Trees |

Linton says... Hi Jason in Portland..... Sorry to hear that you need to take an expensive drug regime for your immune system. I have been helping a very good friend facing similar problems so I can empathise with you. If you would like any plants sent down from Melbourne just let me know and I will be happy to assist. I don't have much luck with avocados here though due to my dry sandy soil. Cheers! | About the Author Linton Springvale, Vic 13th July 2014 9:18am #UserID: 2286 Posts: 994 View All Linton's Edible Fruit Trees |

Jason says... Hey Linton, I'm ok with plants to keep me busy right now. I tried really hard to fix my immune system but in the end just switching it off seems the best allround solution. I'm taking the best organ transplant drug and it has no side effects that I can tell, it's stopping my immune system killing me and seems to be working amazingly well so far. Probably works a treat for all kinds of weird immune conditions. I reccomend this approach if all else is failing. | About the Author Jason Portland 14th July 2014 5:51am #UserID: 637 Posts: 1217 View All Jason's Edible Fruit Trees |
