What shrubs/trees can grow out of cracked boulders?

    11 responses

Hi,

I've always admired how beautiful trees that grow out of cracked rocks/boulders are and am hoping that there's an appropriate edible shrub/dwarf tree that i could grow out of one in my garden. Does anyone know which plants might be suitable or have any experience with such a planting? I live in a warm temperate area (but with harsh frosts) in northeastern Victoria.

Look forward to hearing from you :)

Hi sternus1,

Thanks so much for your quick response :) I have a pomegranate that's about 40cm tall atm but am guessing that i would rather have to grow it from seed to a young seedling. Any thoughts?

I'm quite confused by this post. In any case if you plant the tree in the crack at 40cm it will be fine.

Go for a Capers bush - they love it tough - put some good soil/compost into that crack as deep as you can get it - also that pomegranate and fig would too.

I have seen cedar bay cherry plants growing out of cracks in or between coral rocks. Also the capers as mentioned above.

Many different kinds, but probably Ficus species have some of the most power to push the crack open, find real soil and send roots over the boulder, to turn into a real tree.

Hi everyone!
Thanks so much for all your input. I had totally forgotten about capers! I once saw a documentary where they were growing in stone walls, perhaps in Israel. Capers need to be in absolute full sun don't they? The spot I'm thinking of gets a little shaded in winter.

Do you think persimmon could be a possibility?

Really appreciate your help :)

Dont worry as Capers are Deciduous to Semi Deciduous depending on how cold it gets and a little bit of shade wont be an issue as long as it gets sun in summer

Ah, great one MarkMelb. They're on the shortlist!
I just saw on your profile that you grow topical fruit in Melbourne. A curry leaf tree, and a half hearted go at galangal turmeric and Chinese keys are the bravest I've been so far. Have you tried dragon fruit at all? I love how showy and its one of the few tropical fruits that I can eat, so have been contemplating giving it a bash.

if you go on my edibles I think the dragon fruit pics are there or in a forum area under DF if you search - had a flower but was too late to set fruit coming into winter - have seen dragon fruit growing in Melb near me with fruit on them.
