Hi, I am new to this forum and hope someone can help me please. I have a 20 year old fig tree that produces an abundance of fruit twice a year but the fruit doesn't form properly inside and flesh is spongy. The figs look normal and large from the outside. I have another fig that is in another area of the garden and is bearing edible fruit. Does anyone know why this is happening I've included pics

there are 4 main types of figs

1 common,,, fruits all by it self
without the need for pollination

2 sanpedro,,, has a first crop witout pollination but its second crop
needs to be polinated to ripen properly

3 smyrna,,,, needs polination for
both of its crop

4 capri,,,, polin from this variety
is needed by the sanpedro and smyrna
to ripen their fruits.
a tiny wasp lives in this variety and imerges covered in pollen and seeks
out other capri figs to lay new eggs,
it visites nos.1 2 3 varieties by mistake and pollinates them with there
pollen laded bodies

what your pictures are of are the capri figs, dry inedible figs.

Thank you for your response peter30001.

The only puzzle is that the other fig tree is from the same stock is fruiting perfectly.
I did think is was something to do with the lack of pollination by the wasps but still can't understand why one tree bares edible fruit and the other doesn't. They are about 15 metres away from each other.

A capri fig is usually a male fig and kept to fertilise and ensure fruit set of a smyrna or san pedro fig. its likely the tree producing good edible fruit is one of those. I would not remove the first (capri) fig tree.
