When to bird net?

    5 responses

Plum tree starts with ...
I have a plum tree that I can never pick the fruit when they are ripe as the parrots get them first. It is 20 years old and I have cut it down to head height. I want to bird met it this year. I have done so in the past but the black netting tore as the tree grew over summer. It is now August and just starting to blossom. What is the right time to place netting over this tree? Will use the white netting over a frame that I hope my husband will build for me.

G'day Plumtree. Parrots are pretty destructive and will even pull the flowers off your tree. As long as pollinators can access the flowers I would get your net up pretty quickly.
Seeing that you have brought your tree to a manageable height I would look at summer pruning after harvest and not worry too much about the about the new growth as you would probably take it off anyhow to keep the tree at the height you can access the fruit

Some black poly pipe or the grey electrical conduit can be bent over the tree to prevent the net getting torn by branches.

Do you get fruit fly there?
