ben from adelaide starts with ... Hi all, rightly or wrongly i have staked my wurtz (×3) so they grow tall. They are up to 3 or so metres tall and in their 3rd year. They look great. Problem i have is the trunk has no strength. In a heavy wind one of my stakes broke and the tree leaned over at 90 degrees. Thankfully it didnt break. I am wondering if any one knows if the trunk will get stronger so the tree will be self supporting or should i fashion a better support system. Any advice would b great | About the Author ben Adelaide SA 19th March 2016 12:47pm #UserID: 11073 Posts: 21 View All ben's Edible Fruit Trees |
Pademelon1 says... Hi, I am no expert on growing avocado's, but this might help anyways. Many species of tree grow very flexible branches and trunks initially, and require wind to become firm. The wind stimulates the hardening of the trunk. I am not sure if avocado's are one of these trees, but if so, the way these trees are generally treated is by placing three stakes around the tree, and tying a length of rope or something from each stake to the tree with some slack. In this way, the tree can still move around to stimulate the trunk hardening, but will be kept from falling over or snapping. Hope this helps, Pademelon1 | About the Author Pademelon1 PADDINGTON,2021,NSW 20th March 2016 3:14pm #UserID: 11938 Posts: 138 View All Pademelon1's Edible Fruit Trees |
