starling says... Mostly true, but no doubt there are practical applications of this technology. I suspect that if these weren't GM, people would already have them growing in their gardens. So much hysteria surrounding GM plants, probably the same people who think the Large Hadron collider will create a black hole that will suck everybody on earth into the black abyss of space. I personally cannot understand the fears people have about gene manipulation, considering that nature, which is the cruellest, most brutal and inefficient dice-game imaginable regularly produces such things as Ebola. denise1 says... Not exactly luminous but there is a plant called Kidney wood in Mexico and S.W U.S.A The useful wood is fluorescent and the flowers make good honey. It is called Eysenhardtia polystacha. I have noticed in the NZ forest that certain rotting leaves and wood are fluorescent when shone on by torch at night. | About the Author denise1 auckland NZ 8th September 2013 2:03pm #UserID: 6832 Posts: 688 View All denise1's Edible Fruit Trees |
starling says... Denise, I looked up the Eysenhardtia polystacha, very interesting wood--beautiful grain. You can buy naturally bioluminescent plants here (well, technically Fungus). I have succesfully grown these indoors, but they died when I tried to transplant them outside. They simply cannot handle any sunlight at all. http://www.ebay.com/itm/100-Panellus-stipticus-plug-spawn-Log-kit-Glow-dark-mushroom-/300742268672 | About the Author 8th September 2013 4:33pm #UserID: 8102 Posts: View All 's Edible Fruit Trees |
Mike says... Glowing mushies are pretty common and I have pictured them on long exposures by their own light.I get lampyrid beetles in the house sometimes and see many glowing sea creatures like comb jellies when I go fishing. Eating dinner by plant light could be quite romantic and glowing trees around the yard might cut down on electricity use and help with security. | About the Author 8th September 2013 8:20pm #UserID: 5418 Posts: 1438 View All 's Edible Fruit Trees |
denise1 says... A lake nearby has a strange phenomena. Hitting the water with a stick at night causes a fast ripple of fluorescence. It is far stronger than usually found in sea water. A tree from India called Pterocarpus marsupium has heartwood which when soaked gives a yellow liquid that gives a blue fluorescence. Wikipedia states that it is the only herbal product ever found to regenerate beta cells that produce insulin in the pancreas. It is considered anti-diabetic, the word cure has been used. Traditionally a cup is made from the heartwood and water is soaked in it overnight before drinking. | About the Author denise1 auckland NZ 9th September 2013 7:16am #UserID: 6832 Posts: 688 View All denise1's Edible Fruit Trees |
