About My Edible Backyard

Why Westy1 Love's Edible Plants

We recently bought a beautiful 1 acre block in the Adelaide Hills area of SA, in a temperate environment. Summers are hot and dry, and winters are cold (many frosts) and wet. Our block is on a slight slope and has good top soil over underlying clay.

We love new flavours and exotic fruits, and in the 10 months we have been here have almost filled the acre with a mix of exotic fruit and nuts as well as over 100 natives (and lots of chickens). It is our dream to live a sustainable lifestyle, growing unsual fruit to share with friends and strangers at markets!

Comments: - Out of our three plants, one died from spring frost (it broke dormancy too early), and the other two are growing like mad. The plants were less than 1 ft tall 9 months ago, one growing in a pot is now about 5 ft! Grown in soil from our garden with added chicken poo and seaweed solution.

Avocado - Hass (A) (Grafted) 9/10

Westy1's Edible Fruits
Update: 3024 days 12hrs

Comments: - We purchased this 5ft tree from a local nursery for a good price. We built a large mound to improve drainage (we have clay soils) using a combination of quality soil from under an acacia baileyana, composted chicken poo/straw and a bit of cow manure. We staked it on 3 sides to help protect it from the wind. It is partly shaded from a eucalypt branch overhead. Survived winter frosts without any damage in Adelaide hills. We are on only rainwater so water it by hand once a week at the moment, probably more during its first summer and then it'll mostly be on its own. No flowers yet but shouldn't be long

Avocado - Bacon (B) (Grafted) 10/10

Westy1's Edible Fruits
Update: 3024 days 12hrs

Comments: - It was growing rapidly, even with our winter frosts, and the 45 degree heat didn't seem to bother it either, it grew 2 ft over winter and spring.but then the grasshoppers came out to play and ate the entire plant. nothing left but a  10cm stick! Doubtful it will come back. Any organic grasshopper solutions?

What temperatures do you get down to in the Adelaide hills? I am planning to plant these as a windbreak/hedge for my orchard in alb/Wodonga region, and get a fair few frosts. and the occasional -3/-4 frost.
