About My Edible Backyard

Why Bizibee Love's Edible Plants

I'm on a large corner block which is north and west facing and the house was getting very hot in summer and I neede trees that would provide shade in summer and let the sun in in winter, and having three young children, what better than fruit trees, that they can go out and pick and eat.  My trees are still very young but are producing a few fruits. I am a novice at all this but I love the challenge. I have had afew failures and a few triumphs.  Now I am expanding and trying new ideas.  I set up a green house to try tropical fruit, I also have a patch in the back that only get morning sun and is shady most of the day and I want to create a tropical feel.  My soil is mainly clay and that is very hard to overcome.  We get alot of rain mainly in winter but very dry hot summers.  My main dissapointment is that I can't get my camelia sinensis to take off, which I would really love and my citrus trees aren't doing as well as I like.

Plum tree (Grafted) 10/10

Update: 4517 days 12hrs

Comments: -

This was already here when I moved in.  The first year I moved in, I had so much fruit, we couldn't eat it all.  I made some plum jam with some.  The rest I was giving it away in boxes.  The following year in winter I pruned it back hard  because I wanted the branches to start growing lower so a could reach the fruit and neaten up the tree.  That summer I got no fruit which I expected.  The next three years I got very little fruit.  I guess I pruned I bit to hard.

Actually this is my neighbours tree, a large portion falls on my side of the fence.  I prune and take care of my side, little I can do for the other side.  The kids love picking the berries in summer.  I don't think the berries are as plump as they should be, they feel abit dryish and not juicy but taste sweet.  It's a very large neglected tree.

This year I planted it in the ground with a mixture of dirt, cow manure and compost.  It doesn't seem to be doing so well.  The Tahitians lime next to it planted at the same with the same mixture seems to be doing fine.  It gets plenty of sun.  I think be the conifers growing behind in along the fence line in the neighbours back yard could be the reason. Or am over compensating with water because of the conifers. Don't know!

Update: 4519 days 9hrs

Bought in pot at market 4 years ago.  Had a gumtree which was removed stump and all three years ago and planted the cherry tree in its place.  The tree is west facing, gets full sun and is thriving.  I seasol twice a year and fertilize once a year with cow manure and slow release fertilizer. Got a few cherries last year and this year but the birds got to them before I did so I don't know how good they are, have to ask the birds.

Avocado 10/10

Bizibee's Edible Fruits
Update: 4519 days 9hrs

Comments: -

I grew this tree from seed 15 years ago while I was living in Sydney. When I moved back to Melbourne I brought it with me. It ended up dying of, I was so dissapointed. I left it in its the pot (it was over a metre high) and forgot about it. About a year later I went to clean the area behind the shed, I noticed that my avocado tree sprouted again. It had 40cm shoot coming out the bottom. I left it in the pot for a few years and then two years ago I decided to plant it in the grown and it just took off. Now it is over 2 metres high and very bushy, lush and green (no fruit yet). I just water and fertilize it now and again in summer and thats all. If it never produces fruit it doesn't worry me, I just love the look of it.

I bought this 2 years ago from a nursery and planted it in my front yard which is west facing with lots of sun.  I have clay soil and I dug a very deep and wide hole.  The I used a bag of dirt for roses mixed with cow manure.  Initially it did very well but 2years down the track, it seems to be struggling.  I have watered in seasol and sprinkled with citrus feed, to no availe.  Any suggestions?

Mango - Bowen Seedling (Seedling) 10/10

I think it is a Bowen.  Bought from Bunnings 3 years ago in pot.  Since then I have transplanted into a bigger pot.  It is thriving.  It is in a sheltered area. Has survived 2 cold winters.  This year is currently producing flowers.  Currently preparing ground for transplanting.  Do I need to clip the top of it before planting in ground?

Pistachio Nut Tree (Seedling) 7/10

Just bought this not long ago of ebay.  It is a very small seedling.  I understand that you need two to cross pollinate and I don't know if this one is a male or female.  My kids and I love pistachios and would love to find a piastachio tree that is double grafted with male and female.  I have limited space to plant two trees.  Any ideas?
