About My Edible Backyard

Why Jenny Love's Edible Plants

I love growing things to eat, unfortunately there are only so many fruit trees i can squeeze in to a suburban backyard, and those fruit fly are my no. 1 enemy. It is so lovely to eat a delicious fruit you have grown yourself.

Since reading about growing trees in bags there's no holding me back!

Also top-working existing trees sounds very intriguing - I'm going to try that as soon as I can

Hello Jenny, I was wondering whether you would be interested in selling a small cutting of red flowering catus you have in your photo - i have lots of white ones which are very beautiful but yours looks very interesting, Cheers Samantha from Ahimsa Cottage

I just loved the description of a fruit that tasted like lemon delicious pudding, took a punt, bought one, it has only ever given me one fruit, i tasted it and was sold! There are masses of flowers on it now but no fruit set even though i'm keeping the water up (you'd think in Brisbane we'd have high enough humidity) so i'm having a go at hand pollination. The suspense is killing me. I hope it works.

update, fruit rather bland and disappointing, looking into grafting different varieties on to the tree

found it necessary to regularly spray with fungicide to keep the fruit

Lovely little tree this, unfortunately the fruit fly are attacking it.

UNBELIEVABLE crop this spring (2012) no special treatment but I did cut back quite hard in winter.

trying to keep on top of the fruit fly, it's not practical to cover the tree so am alternating weekly sprays of naturalure & another one, and picking up fallen fruit. Seems only moderately successful.

How is this variety faring for you? There is not much info/feedback about it out there. :)

Dead and gone, not impressed at all. No vigour.

I agree Jenny - rootstock vigour was not great for mine either - very slow to recover from shipping and didnt grow back well after winter - Ive grafted to my own cold tolerant cherimoya and have 4 powering away in march 2017 a month after grafting - hoping this is successful.

TRIED BUT DIED

Palm - Acai (Seedling)

Update: 4246 days 21hrs

bought this in February, planted it in the ground. The dog has dug it up 4 times then chewed its leaves off. Now it's potted in premium mix, I gave it seasol & plant starter and am crossing my fingers. It's the stick sheltering next to my mangosteen. Bets anyone? Been through too much punishment - just withered away
