About My Edible Backyard

Why CasONeill1 Love's Edible Plants

like to try a wide range of things in my Melbourne garden - sub-tropical as well as cooler climate plants. We have been afflicted by drought for years, have less and less rain, with increasingly hot summers - temperatures up to 47C and hot dry winds! We have water restrictions which are about to become more stringent. I have potentially 25,000 litres of tank water - but the tanks are not yet full after the winter. The shower water, washing machine water and kitchen rinse water all go to different parts of the garden via different drip systems, but none of this is enough. Needless to say, I mulch better and deeper each year.

have 5 compost bins on the go all the time (fed partly by plate scrapings from a local cafe) and my chooks and ducks also provide copious mulch from shredded paper, hair sweepings from the hairdresser, autumn leaves, sawdust etc.

I LOVE my garden!

Apricot trees4 - Does anyone know of an apricot variety which is resistant to viral gumosis. I would also like to know of the best variety for low chill conditions. - does Melbourne count as low chill these days?? ..4935 days 9hrs
Good fruiting quandongs - Many thanks once again Jantina - I've just emailed my address. Looking forward to specific instructions for growing the seeds as I've heard that they need to be grown with/on a host - and I'm not sure exactly what that means! Cas ..5359 days 8hrs

I'm ashamed to say that it's still in a pot - filling this form out is a good reminder to plant the little dearie!

I planted this in similar position to the Sweet Granadilla but less sheltered as I want it to cover the front fence. Hasn't handled the winter well - lost its leaves and has died back quite a bit, but I think (hope!) that it will re-sprout in spring/summer. I didn't plant this in a large pot (with bottom
cut out) but probably should have.

Planted in a warm, sheltered, north facing position and thriving. I cut the bottom out of a large pot and planted it in that so that it got the heat of the pot to start off and can then send its roots into the ground.

Curry Tree

Curry tree - I have planted this (well mulched) in the hottest part of the garden (Melbourne) - north facing, VERY hot in summer. It needs quite a bit of water in summer and the first winter it lost all of its leaves. However, this last winter (its 2nd), it has retained its leaves and is even starting to put on new growth now. I was given a 2nd one as a present and have kept this in a pot where it seems happy both in summer and winter in a warm position.

Planted (in Melbourne) in a sheltered north facing part of the garden - some shade from street trees - I don't think I gave it enough water last summer - will do better this year!
