Fig Black Genoa 9/10

Xhristofer's Edible Fruits
Update: 336 days 21hrs

Yum! What a plant. Needs lots of water in the warmer months and the application of pyrethrum and garlic prevents caterpillars from eating the leaves off. Fruit is very good; sweet and juicy. Size up around 100 grams which is pretty large.

Mine (and my father's) suffered last season and didn't produce much fruit and what was there was dry. Just a bad season I guess. Season before that the trees were loaded. Fresh fig are so good! They will fruit all year round but spring summer fruit are best.

My tree has been pruned to give a central trunk and allow above groung branches. It was formed as a central trunk with 4 surrounding grounded branched before. This made it difficult to support and it broke often.

I like this fig, so planted one. It took a while to adapt to the new (dry rock/clay) conditions, shedding all of its leaves, but is now flushing with new growth from lower limbs.

This tree came up from a seed a bird dropped.  I had no idea what it was at first, but as soon as it grew a bit bigger, and I felt the leaves, I knew what it was.  Seems to like where it is, so will probably just leave it as is.

Town Farm's Edible Fruits
Update: 635 days 0hrs

Only planted in October 2009 and seems a bit slow to take off though I see it is getting some new growth now.  Had 3 figs on it but I removed them as they were bigger than the tree!!

Took a little while to take off but is now showing good growth signs.  Getting a little wind so will re-stake it with a stronger stake.

Really taken off so am expecting good things this season.

Fig - Brown Turkey

Fred's Edible Fruits
Update: 636 days 17hrs

Comments: -

Not much fruit for the first couple of years - due to birds getting them.  2009 saw us put up some 'holocaust owls' and we got quite a few figs, if we kept an eye on them. At the latter part of the year the birds were starting to get at them, so we netted it.

Unfortunately, this fig tree has now died - it rotted out at the base - cause unknown

Such a hardy fig, that makes a beautiful fresh fruit. I don't waste these ones on grilling/baking :) They are best eaten plucked fresh from the tree! They are the first EVER fruits I have grown, I am very proud of them!

Question:

I do strugle with rust on the leaves, what would be the best treatment for that?

Comments: - My little fig- Black Genoa and dwarf Calomondin  arrived by post all safe and snug in their box from Daleys yesterday.. Will be re-potting them tommorow. Will not be using the same fertilisers as I did for my 3 other fruit trees but going with organic compost instead. Read somewhere that a handful of lime wil be good for fig trees..
