One of my favourite fruits.  I know there are better varieties, but I had to think of size of tree - this is a dwarf.  These should still taste as good, if not better than the tired old ones at the supermarket! Yum yum. Planted early Feb. and had a new flush shortly after.  Planted in direct line of rain-water run-off - is in a mound on a slope , and seems to be healthy and happy.

Longan - Kohala marcotted (Cutting)

Comments: -

I love fresh Longan fruit (usually a bit old and tatty at shops).  I'm not familiar with varieties, but Kohala sounded nice enough so I went with it. Was planted early Feb. this year, and has taken 2 1/2 months to finally start growing - beautifully coloured, and new flushes growing rapidly.  Has been planted in path of water run-off, but is in a mound on a slope, and seems quite happy.

Delicious fruit that's juicy, sweet and tangy, and very attractive too. I've grown it before, and had to have another.  A very productive tree once it starts to fruit.

I have grown a few seedlings and kept one for myself, from a truly delicious fruit we came across in an abandoned orchard while learning to prune. Not sure if I'm game to plant it as it's supposed to grow quite tall and my garden is already full lol. Note: Have given this plant to a friend with acreage who swears she will share the fruit with me!

Winter 2011: I am not sure what variety these are as again my friend is germinating them from seeds that I collected. You can see in the pic that the sizes are very different. The big one was one of the first of all the seeds we collected to germinate while the other has come up months later. LESSON: be patient!!!

Spring 2011: My friend took one and I took the other. Hopefully between us we can get fruit from one!

Summer 2012: He has been home for a few months now but he is not happy. I think that the weather has just been too cold for him to really get going. The weather is warming up now though so I am hoping that he will get a chance to put on some new growth before winter. I might have to get a glasshouse or bring him into the bathroom to keep him alive over winter if he doesn't get a bit more established.

Pest Control: Ants love farming scale on them. The tiny leaf curling caterpillars love the new growth and you have to be SO carful not to snap it off when you're trying to get rid of it.

Arrived from Daleys looking great (Aug 2011) but Sydney was a bit cold & it lost some of that Kyogle growth! I took it out of the bonsai bag & tranplanted it to a warm black pot - that plus spring weather has seen it re establish & looks good. Has had protection from hot arvo sun over summer & has grown better in this position

I've heard good things about this variety and it is slightly different to the 4 others most easily available. It has just gone in the ground, but it is a beautiful little tree!

2011 - Had a large crop of fruit (around 200) in its first year in ground. Taste is fantastic - a cross between pear and peach with a little tang. Must bag from fruit fly. This is a vigorous grower, but quite dense compared to other loquats.

This is great, BJ. I have a dwarf wai chee in a pot, 4 years old and never fruited (it lost all its leaves for a while last year) in central western Brisbane. It sounds as though Bosworth 3 would be better. I have heard Anette McFarlane say that conditions for lychee fruiting are right in Brisbane about once every ten years.

Yes Diana, the B-3 will fruit every year here. Many others are biennial at best, but B-3 will crop heavily each year, even with heavy pruning at the right times and in a pot if you can keep it under control. Many other types are unsuited to pots due to their reluctance to fruit after pruning. The other suitable pot specimen is the Salathiel, but it bears biennially, but bears well when it does, and is a much smaller tree with one of the best fruits.

Grown in pot for 1 year, but failed to hold numerous small fruit, so have transferred to the ground. it got wind scorched in an exposed spot, so was transplanted into a better spot and cut back and is now pushing lots of new growth. Hoping for a few fruits next year.

This is a marcotted tree which had already flowered when i bought from a nursery here called Plant Factory last weekend.

I intend on pruning and keeping this one small as well.
