Midyim Berry (Seedling)

VF's Edible Fruits
Update: 12 days 2hrs

Comments: -

This is supposed to be one of the few really tasty bush-tucker fruits so I thought I'd try it. Fruit is a small berry that is white with blue-black spots. Generally free of pests and diseases. Is low-growing (gen. 80-100cm) and can be planted in most spots as long as ground is constantly moist.

Planted: 2012

Growing: In a Pot

Qty: 3

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Pollination: Self Pollination

Pest Control:

Should only need bird-netting for fruit.

Mulberry - Black Shahtoot? (Cutting)

BJ's Edible Fruits
Update: 17 days 16hrs

Comments: -

A cutting from a tree growing wild on an undeveloped block I hope to nurture this plant and put it in the naturestrip. The fruit are delicious (although nothing beats the Black English) and the parent plant has survived years of neglect and no water in unimproved soil (at least 10 metres above the water table) so the cutting should be tough! I'm planning on espilaring it against the fence (in a pot) and keeping a close eye on the berries to prevent paver stains.

Maybe my husband won't notice!

From a 10cm cutting in November 2010 it is now 1m high in October 2011 and covered in fruit. Clearly a tough weed (that will never be released from a pot!) By Jan 2012 it has its second crop of fruit (I've not seen such a thing before) and is 1.5m high. This plant is a weed!! I intend to plant it out on the verge come autumn as it cannot stay in the pot (it will stain pavers and grows too quickly).

May 2012 - the plant has put on MORE berries ... and been relocated to the verge. It was pruned heavily to assist with shape and root growth (as vandals killed the mango previously on the verge - although there are thorny roses planted around the mulberry to discourage this!). The prunings have been turned into about 20 cuttings. Plant is recovering well and hopefully will soon realised that cropping from spring to winter is a bit keen!!

Pollination: Cross Pollination

Mulberry- Black

VF's Edible Fruits
Update: 22 days 4hrs

Comments: -

I love, and now the children do too, the sweet and juicy fruit which is best eaten straight off the tree.  I'm not sure of variety I have, but fruit are about 30-35mm long, black and fat. Main fruiting is in spring, but can have some small, extra flushes of fruit in Summer and Autumn.  Can be messy due to staining fruit, and dropping  large leaves late Autumn (is deciduous).  Is a very fast grower and can be quite big - best to get a dwarf variety in an urban environment.  If in rural environment, go big! (Watch-out though, as livestock love the leaves and will "prune" quite heavily).

Fruiting Months September and October

Have planted around edge of island in new fish pond that I had excavated. Is not ideal yet (pond not full), but they are doing quite well so far, intermingled with comfrey, and around an old big mulberry on the island.

Had a little bit of fruit on it from the nursery, looks like it will mostly all ripen happily

Irish Strawberry Tree - arbutus canariensis

Kathy's Edible Fruits
Update: 41 days 22hrs

Comments: -

Summer 2010: This one was a gift from my sister. She picked it cause it sounded interesting (and she knew I didn't already have it!).

The flowers are pretty but it hasn't fruited yet. It does have lovely bright green new growth.

Spring 2011: lots of new growth. Since spring started it has doubled in volume!

Summer 2011: I don't think that it likes all the rain. Getting brown patches on the inside of a lit of the folliage. Fingers crossed the weather warms up soon.

Summer 2012: The browning has stopped but the growing tips were all getting droopy. I decided not to cut them off just in case and it paid off cause there was nothing wrong with them - they were flowering!!!

Planted: 2010

Height 0.75 metres

Growing: In a Pot

Qty: 1

Sun/Shade: Medium Sun

Water Given in: Spring

Pollination: No

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Dynamic Lifter, Seasol, Charlie Carp, worm juice (in rotation)

Pest Control: Ants seem to be farming some sort of GINORMOUS fat black bloated scale things on the hardened off branches (just where the leaves come out). I picked as many off as I could and then sprayed it with pest oil.

Mulberry - Black English 9/10

Caledapho's Edible Fruits
Update: 58 days 12hrs

Comments: - Our tree is huge and graceful. Its beautiful to look at and beautiful to eat.We prune off the dead canes from the inside each year, and its about 3m2 inside now. My kids use it for a cubby house:)The fruit ripens in waves; raining berries for about 3 days, then next to none for the next 3-5 days. While the berries are falling, we put a sheet under the tree, and the first ones dont have time to spoil before the berry shower ends.Apart from fresh handfuls straight off the tree, we like to blend the berries with a little sugar and pour over vanilla ice-cream. A favourite summer treat!

Fast growing good looking tree. Planted in Sep 2011 and it is nearly 2m tall, but still no fruit. I had one berry so far. Flowers are falling off for some reason. I hope it starts fruiting soon. I read about this tree and decided to grow it for the supposedly abudant fruit.
