Feijoa BJ's Edible FruitsUpdate: 17 days 16hrs Comments: - Rescued from a throw-out these plants were very root-bound and dehydrated for about 4 years before being released into the ground in 2009. They have responded well to freedom and as of October 2010 are covered in flowers. In 2010 I was surprised to discover that these Bunnings seedlings do set the occasional fruit (albeit a bit bland). I'm hoping that the fruit improves a bit this year. Irrespective they purpose of these plants is to provide a hedge so the occasional edible fruit is just a bonus! That said, a named variety might be nice - especially if more fruit were provided (and tastier fruit). I could also practice grafting by taking cuttings to the original plants. I might remove / relocate strawberry guava and put in named feijoa. Jan 2012 - no fruit this year - but I intend to add some more feijoa to complete the hedge come autumn. They are a tough plant with interesting folige and stunning (tasty) flowers. May 2012 - an additional 6 tiny seedlings purchased to complete the hedge. The existing plants have produced a reasonable crop of somewhat grainy bubble-gum fruit. It makes good sorbet. Planted: 2009 Height 1.5 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 4 First Fruited: 5 Years from purchase in pot Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Water Given in: Winter Autumn and WinterPollination: Self Pollination When I Fertilise: Never Pest Control: Not require Organic Status:Partially Organic Was this review helpful? Avocado - Rincon (Grafted)VF's Edible FruitsUpdate: 19 days 21hrs Comments: - Love all avo's. Is one of my "A" varieties. Is a dwarf variety with a spreading habit, and much slower grower than my others. The tree's not attractive - very gangly looking. Fruit written off by some, but my family found it nice tasting - very creamy and mild flavour. Fruit not a good storer once cut though, as the invisible strings darken. Best eaten within 24-48hrs. Don't discount this one for the backyard if you have limited space. Note: Fruit ripe now (April-May) when there is none at any road-side stalls (Tamborine Mt.), so I'm happy! Fruiting Months March, April, May, June Planted: 2010 Height 1.3 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Fruit Harvest: 2 Fruit Per Year First Fruited: 2 Years from purchase in pot Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Autumn Pollination: Cross Pollination Cross Pollinator Variety: Sheppard Fertiliser or Organics Used: Manure and Citrus fertiliser When I Fertilise: Spring Pest Control: None yet, but I may net next crop as something (possum/bushrats?) pulled off/damaged most of crop. Only 2 fruit survived. Question: When is it best to prune,as I'd like to attempt to shape tree? Was this review helpful? Cherimoya - Forbidden Fruit variety (Grafted)VF's Edible FruitsUpdate: 21 days 16hrs Comments: - Cherimoya has to be one of the most delicious fruits I've eaten. It is slightly warmer where I live than its' preferred range (by a couple of degrees), but I'm still hopefull of some fruit. This variety is a bonus as it self-pollinates. Planted early May - will need some shelter from cold winter winds. Jaboticaba (Seedling) VF's Edible FruitsUpdate: 25 days 7hrs Comments: - Delicious fruit. Can fruit several times a year, with only short time between flowering and harvesting. May be many years though before tree starts bearing. Planted early Feb. and has grown 2-3 inches on most tips in 2 1/2 months. I planted in a mound over an under-ground spring - so far so good! Pawpaw - Hawain Bisexual Yellow (Seedling) VF's Edible FruitsUpdate: 29 days 21hrs Comments: - Much nicer than the horrid fruit with the vomit after-taste from years ago. Much more vigorous grower than my red version. Custard Apple -KJ Pinks (Grafted)VF's Edible FruitsUpdate: 30 days 1hrs Comments: - Bought as I love the fruit, but wanted an easy care variety ie. no hand pollination required, and smaller tree. Should taste good as is a bud sport of "Pinks Mammoth", a tasty fruit. Plant very eager to set fruit (set a couple when still in pot, and again when planted out early this year - I removed, as plant too immature and shapeless yet.) Looking forward to great fruit. Height 1 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Summer Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: Citrus feed and Seasol When I Fertilise: Spring Pest Control: Tree small enough for me to manually remove the odd scale insect, but may have to use white oil spray as tree grows. Nil other problems yet. Question: When is it best to tip prune? Was this review helpful? Yes | No | Report * You need your own My Edibles Page to contribute Quick & Easy |
Avocado - Hass (A) (Grafted) VF's Edible FruitsUpdate: 30 days 2hrs Comments: - I actually have Lamb Hass, which is supposed to be a semi-dwarf variety with larger fruit than Hass. Hass is my favourite avo. as I love the nutty flavour. ( This is my second attempt of this variety - the first drowned after receiving 400mm rain in 24hrs and it's dish not draining fast enough.) This is my second "A" type. Was planted Oct.'11 and as far as bushiness goes, in 6mth it has doubled. Nice shape , attractive tree. Planted: 2011 Height 1.2 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Summer Pollination: Cross Pollination Cross Pollinator Variety: Sheppard Fertiliser or Organics Used: Manure and Citrus food Pest Control: Nil required yet. Avocado - Sheppard (B) (Grafted) VF's Edible FruitsUpdate: 30 days 8hrs Comments: - Whole family loves the fruit, which is eaten almost every day. Sheppard is my "B" variety. I've 3 varieties which fruit at different times, so hoping to have continual supply. Tree did set fruit this year(2012), but promptly lost them when I fertilised and instead had a huge growth spurt (20-40 cm on most branches). Attractive tree presently. Height 2 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Summer Pollination: Cross Pollination Cross Pollinator Variety: Lamb Hass and Rincon Fertiliser or Organics Used: Manure and Citrus fertiliser Pest Control: None required yet.
