MaryT's Edible FruitsUpdate: 64 days 5hrsComments: -
My grandma used to put a couple of cumquats with a red envelope containing coins under our pillows on Chinese New Year's Eve so it's the first joy we find on New Year's Day. Now it reminds me of the smell of gunpowder that drifted in through the window from the fire crackers that had been going off all night. I don't remember ever eating them, but now I make marmalade from the harvest. I have one big tree in a half wine barrel and two smaller ones which I must put into bigger pots.
I've had the smaller ones for longer but the big one was an extravagance that I decide to indulged in when I was feeling reckless one day. I don't have a car so when a friend took me to a nursery I just lost my head.
10/12/11 If you like cumquat marmalade (who doesn't) you must have one of these trees. They keep producing all year (in Sydney); I use the odd ones like lemon/lime and make marmalade when there are masses of them. Sometimes I add cognac or Grand Marnier in them - YUM
