Grumichama - Orange

John Mc's Edible Fruits
Update: 2 days 10hrs

Comments: -

Small dark red, almost black colored berry with soft, juicy pulp tasting like a cherry. Flavor is quite good, fruits are usually 1/2-3/4" wide.

Description: Medium sized tree or bush to as high as 30ft, but often much lower. Can be grown as a bush.

Hardiness: Trees are subtropical or tropical and can survive to 26F. Also seems to grow fairly well in warm tropical climates.

Growing Environment: Generally a slow grower, the grumichama likes year-round water and care should be taken to avoid periods of drought. Can be grown in sun or in shade.

Propagation: By seeds, which can take up to 4 years to begin bearing.

Uses: Eaten fresh. Also used to make desserts.

Native Range: Native to coastal areas of Southern Brazil. The grumichama is cultivated in parts of South America.

Orange - Joppa (Grafted)

VF's Edible Fruits
Update: 27 days 13hrs

Comments: -

Supposed to develop into a small, attractive tree.  Bought this variety as tolerates wind. (Planted on exposed side of steep hill - growing beautifully). The fruit are tasty and juicy, a little seedy - fruit tastes like the drink "Tang"!  Does need watering if it hasn't rained for a few weeks (generally winter).

Orange - Lanes Late (Grafted) 8/10

Selfsufficientme's Edible Fruits
Update: 68 days 16hrs

Comments: -

I wanted to extend my orange season and I already had a Washington naval, which produced exceptional tasting and good sized fruit so I decided to give Lane's late a go and I wasn't disappointed.

The tree grew slow at the start but it has found its feet now and is doing well.

The fruit does mature slightly later than my other oranges, so it has helped to extend my orange season. Tastes great and juices well. Fruit set isn't prolific (unlike my Valencia) but I'm sure it will improve as the tree matures.

The tree itself is quite upright in growth and is just awesome in my backyard collection.

I live in a fruit fly prone area but the citrus are usually left alone and if stung the larva never develop - it also helps that the fruit ripening is through winter and the fruit fly numbers are lower.

I would definately recommend the Lane's late naval orange for the backyard.

Fruiting Months February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September

Planted: 2007

Height 3.5 metres

Growing: In the Ground

Qty: 1

Fruit Harvest: 30 Fruit Per Year

First Fruited: 2 Years from purchase in pot

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Water Given in: Autumn

Pruned By: 10% in After Fruiting

Fertiliser or Organics Used: chicken and quail manure, some citrus commercial mix, some trace elements

When I Fertilise: Yearly

Pest Control:

This tree is largly pest free. Gets the occasional leaf miner, caterpilla, or aphid but nothing serious. If I ever do need to spray, I use a little white oil and sometimes pyrethrum but that's very rare.

A lovely dense compact tree, I grow it in a row with dwarf citrus.  Beautiful scented flowers int he spring followed by high quality fruit.  Easy to peal, large juicy oranges.

I have problems with Californian red scale on this tree, it was saved from a cheap reject bin during the drought.   I spray with eco oil and I have cut it back hard to produce a flush of vigorous new growth.

Had my one and only fruit off this about a month ago.  It's only been in for about a year, so I took 99% of the flowers off.....just wanted 1 for a taste.  Very nice orange, but probably not as "orangy" as I would have liked.  Hopefully will get better with age.

Orange - Valencia

BJ's Edible Fruits
Update: 137 days 15hrs

Comments: -

Planted in a raised bed and pruned as a standard the older leaves often look a little dull, I've piled poo around it and added specialised fertiliser ... but it just seems a bit lack-luster. Hopefully it will soon obtain the zest for life. It is flowering - but doesn't seem to put on loads of lush new growth.

Approximately 2 months after the poo episode and some extra loving ... this plant is covered in flowers and new growth. I think WA soil (even improved) just does not have the nutrients many plants require and additional compost etc is requried

This plant suffered in summer with only a small amount of watering. I've sinced discovered that WA citrus need approximately 6 litres of water per day per square metre of canopy and the orange has responded very well to an almost 7-fold increase in water! It is still very prone to disease and struggles after a few hot days, but it is going to make it.

In June 2011 I transplanted this tree into better soil. So far the transplant has gone well with no apparent stress.

It hasn't flowered that much in the summer of 2012 - lot of green leaves. Come autumn I think I'll re-improve the soil (pig poo?) I've mulched with sweet straw.

Thyme - orange

Kathy's Edible Fruits
Update: 143 days 22hrs

Comments: -

Autumn 2011: still has small leaves like normal thyme but completely different shape. Much lower growing. Had a beautiful orange and thyme fragrance (as the name suggests). It's not big enough to harvest yet but I am keen to cook with it. Smells beautiful.

Because my normal thyme doesn't like competition from other ground covers I have put this one in the pot with the ice cream bean where it will act as living mulch.

Update 09-Dec-2011: Most of the tiny fruits have been nibbled by some insects. New pic attached.

Got a couple of fruits last season. The fruits were already forming when we got this from a nursery. But those fruits didnt have the blood red colour in the flesh that i was expecting. It was moderately sweet.

Its flowering again and i hope to get some blood oranges this time.
