Wampee - Yeem Pay 9/10

Davewastech's Edible Fruits
Update: 1577 days 19hrs

Comments: -

Wonderful, rather complex taste. Fruited after 2 years. All the fruit ripened at the same time (February). Attractive shrub, looks healthy thru the whole year (I'm in Sydney).  But in second season I got no flowers or fruit. Third season got about 70 fruit.

Seedling purchased from Daleys. I planted a few seeds from my first crop and most of them are growing (slowly - 1 year old, just 20cm high), so I suppose that's an easy way to grow them if you're not in a hurry.

Fruiting Months February

Height 1.4 metres

Growing: In the Ground

Qty: 1

First Fruited: 2 Years from purchase in pot

Pollination: No

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Citrus fertilizer 3 / year

Pest Control:

First crop had no pests, but third season about half had Qld fruit fly. (I'll net next season!)  If it didn't get fruit fly I'd rate it 11 out of 10. Up there with the yummiest! (although not quite up there with good durians...)

Organic Status:Partially Organic

Kenlovell1's Edible Fruits
Update: 1701 days 12hrs

Comments: - A very handsome tree that is now growing quite quickly after a slow start. It had its first fruit last year - a small crop but delicious if left until very ripe. The fruit fly left them alone too, which was a pleasant surprise. The tree currently has a lot of early flower shoots and I'm looking forward to a good crop this year.

Amanda's Edible Fruits
Update: 1813 days 18hrs

Comments: - I love the Guy Sam fruits - they are so moreish. Have had trouble getting the Yeem Pay to grow here. I have several seedling plants now, to see what they produce. If the Guy Sam fruits were bigger they could be so popular.
Weighting the branches down inceases flowering, like it does for apples. They also need any alkalinity managed and prefer slightly acidic and organic rich soils.
A nice looking large bush here, bees love the flowers. Likes regular watering.
Our two 10yr old trees were relocated from 700km north and handled this well. I recently lost one of these - I don't know why at this stage. It died quite suddenly.

I appreciate the grapefruit flavour without the bitterness and sourness. And I find the grape-like clusters of fruit very appealing.

It has grown very well in a sunny spot after one year, at almost the same rate as my Eureka lemon.  In my previous garden I put the same variety in a shaded spot and it was very slow growing- until it reached the sun.

Height 0.7 metres

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Occasional organic liquid fertiliser

Question: I tried an elongated Wampi at Tropical Fruit World, and am wondering now if I should have planted a Yeem Pay variety. Anyone compared that with the Guy Sam?

JohnMc1's Edible Fruits

The Wampi/Wampee is an attractive, evergreen, slender tree and has been described as the finest fruit of Siam (Thailand). It is also a highly valued backyard tree in southern China and southeast Asia. It is classed as a subtropical / tropical fruit, but is relatively hardy and can withstand light frosts.

This tree is a relative of the citrus family, thus its ability to grow in coastal Australia as far south as Melbourne and inland where the frosts are not too severe.

The fruits are highly aromatic and can be sweet to tangy to almost sour depending on the variety and ripeness. Straight from the tree, Wampee are very refreshing, thirst quenching and cleansing to the palate. They grow in clusters from a few up to eighty in one bunch.

The fruits turn yellow when ripe and have a thin, sometimes brittle skin, somewhat like paper. They generally have only 1-2 seeds in each fruit and are best left to ripen on the tree for as long as possible. They are a very attractive looking tree that can grow up to 8 meters with, beautiful dark green ruffled compound leaves. They have a dense growth habit making them an ideal shade tree.
Wampee should be treated very much like any of the other citrus trees in regard to cultivation. A sunny, well drained site with plenty of water and organic matter should see these trees thrive.

It is a spectacular landscape plant!!!

The crop is borne solely on the tips of branches, so the less pruning the better. Very few problems have been observed with pest and diseases other than occasional infestations of aphids.
Mature trees can produce up to 50kg of fruit each year. Like its close relative the citrus it is full of vitamin C, approximately 28mg per 100g. This fruit can be used for making jams, jellies, pies, and drinks but best eaten fresh, straight from the tree. If you want them to keep a bit longer you can try leaving the stalks on them.
