Syzygium australe - Brush Cherry

Black Brazilian Cherry

A highly ornamental shrub with spreading branches and aromatic foliage. The young bronze foliage turns a glossy deep green when mature and deep red in cold, dry weather. The brazilian cherry has delicate white flowers that are followed within 3 weeks by a ribbed fruit that ripen to black in this selection. The fruit is delicious eaten out-of-hand or as an ingredient in jelly, sauce and pies. Refrigeration enhances the flavour.

Scrub cherry - Syzygium australe

The Brush Cherry is a common plant of coastal and highland rainforests. Known to reach up to 25m in its ideal habitat it is usually much smaller in cultivation. The leaves are opposite, rounded and bright, glossy green in colour. White flowers are followed by large, fleshy, red fruits in profusion. These are oval in shape and around 20 mm long with a large seed. The fruits are edible and are often made into jams.

Capulin Cherry

Capulin Cherry If you are in a warmer climate without the pleasure of growing real cherries it's worth planting a Capulin. Fruit size is small in comparison, but you just have to eat more. Very fast growing. The white fragrant flowers are followed by purple cherry like fruit 1-2cm with a green flesh. The sweet flavour becomes slightly bitter nearer to the skin. The fruit is delicious eaten fresh, made into jams, preserves or wine.
