This is a large spreading strangling fig with a dense shady crown. It is an excellent bird attracting tree and is beautiful if grown in a container or used for bonsai.

Ficus macrophylla - Morton Bay Fig

A beautiful shade tree, suitable for parks or large blocks which attracts birds and fruit-bats. Tall tree, (strangler), widely buttressed, growing to 45 m in sub-tropical and littoral rainforests. Makes a handsome tub plant when young.

As a strangler fig the seeds germinate high in the canopy of the rainforest on a limb or in the fork of a tree. The small trees sends out ariel roots which head for the ground where they take root and begin the process of strangling the host tree, this can take 100 years or more to completely rot the original tree leaving a latice work of roots and a hollow trunked fig tree. They can be grown as a free standing tree provided they have plenty of room, makes a lovely indoor potted plant or bonsai. Fruits are edible.
