Linton starts with ... I bought some fresh Tamarind pods when they were in the store last year and tried to grow one from some of those seeds. However they never sprouted so wondering if anyone has ever sprouted Tamarind seeds from store bought pods and if there is a special procedure to do it. Would also like to know if anyone has ever managed to grow a Tamarind tree in Melbourne as I’ve never seen one here anywhere. It’s probably because they can’t survive the Winter here and get too big to grow in a greenhouse. Tamarind tree number two, which I am now growing from seed is supposed to be a dwarf variety of Tamarindus indica. It is claimed to grow to only 1.5 metres and can fruit in a pot. I’m not sure if that’s true as I can find little or no information about any type of dwarf Tamarind. This plant is about 4 months old and still only 20 cm high. I would have expected a normal Tamarind to grow much more vigorously over the long hot Summer so perhaps the fact that it is still small indicates that it really is a dwarf variety. Please let me know your opinions, thanks.

Pademelon1 says... Hi Linton, I don't know about store bought, but I germinated a number straight off the tree and found you had to remove a watertight outer-coat or the seeds wouldn't come up. They germinated after about a month. I have a 4 tamarind seedlings in Sydney, all of which are still very small despite being 3+ years old. This is partially due to restricted pot size, but also I think because of climate. I started with about 15 but each year during winter a couple have carked it, though they seem perfectly happy during summer. It's my guess that without protection, tamarinds would not be able to survive without severe damage in Melbourne through winter, as even Sydney seems to be pushing it, though there are a couple of mature specimens here. I don't know anything about a dwarf variety though. Hope this helps, Pademelon1 | About the Author Pademelon1 PADDINGTON,2021,NSW 17th February 2018 12:30am #UserID: 11938 Posts: 138 View All Pademelon1's Edible Fruit Trees |
