Ants on Black Sapote Fruit

    5 responses

Hi I recently discovered that I have ants (around a dozen on each fruit) coming from under the calyx of my unripe black sapote fruit whenever I touch the fruit. Is this something I should be worried about?

Hi Chad

Oftentimes presence of ants on plants signals an underlying problem. Ants doesn't go around wandering aimlessly. They are there for a reason, either food or shelter. In my case with my asimina Triloba and white sapote the ants were farming black/brown scales. I annihilated the scales and the ants were gone. Sometimes they also harbor aphids. With my custard apples, they are building a nest under the tree. Again I eliminated the ants and they were gone. Some of them they like to rob the sweet nectar of flowers. You must investigate closely the reason of their presence before you can take the appropriate action.

Happy gardening :-)
