Harry says... Mark, It’s been growing surprisingly well. The tree is around 1.9m, but for the last year it has slowed down a bit - I suspect that is because it’s been restricted by the container it’s in (50cm approx.). I was told that the feeder roots need more width than height to grow well in pots. It has just finished flowering but I have not had any fruit on it yet. I have had the tree for just over 3 years – I know it can take up to 4 years to fruit so I am hopeful I might get some the following year…fingers crossed! No, I haven’t got any A’s to cross-pollinate it…just don’t have the room. The Bacon is somewhat self-pollinating and it should still bear some fruit but having a pollinator would definitely help. Cheers

Markmelb says... Hi Harry - yours is looking a bit gangly compared to mine of a similar age but had 5 good sized Avos off it this year and it looks like an even better crop next year - do you put a little gypsum and tteaspoon of zinc every 2 years? as well as fert like Dyn lifter 4 times a year (end Aug Dec Feb & April) etc some pics of Bacon in 500mmm pot and another of LH in ground and wurtz also in 500mm pot - Bacon is going into eithe a 200lt bag next year or huge pot - I think width better than height not like your barrell - the 200lt bags are low and wide same height as 100lt but bigger diameter - those big water cubes work well i hear but you need a forklift - LOL

Ross says... Hi Markmelb What is your potting mix/fertillizer to achieve such lush growth in smallish pots? Due to lack of available spots in my garden that gets enough sun I’m now resorting to pot culture for blueberries, dwarf limes, figs & palmer mango. I have gone with Searles quality mix with 20% coarse sand 20% vermiculite and slow release fruit/citrus granules. I liquid fertilise with fish/seaweed and diluted worm wee every few weeks. | About the Author Ross Balmoral 15th November 2014 8:55pm #UserID: 468 Posts: 18 View All Ross's Edible Fruit Trees |

Markmelb says... well use now Debco premium topped with Amgrow wettasoil mulch to 10 - 15cm from top - does settle a bit in a couple years - it has to be better than wht daleys uses for their tall pots - planted a friends Bacon yesterday and was like worst wet badly drained mix ever and roots wernt that good either - my fert regime is much the same as Birdwoods tags | About the Author Markmelb , 15th November 2014 9:56pm #UserID: 7785 Posts: 1192 View All Markmelb's Edible Fruit Trees |

Harry says... Hey Mark, Your avo trees looks amazing! Yesterday I replanted my tree into a better pot (60cm diameter). The issue I had before was that the container was a bit too high and being next to an open area, it used to take a beating from the strong winds. It’s normally not a problem – but in summer it does cause some leaf damage/burn. I don’t know if this is typical of our climate but every year I also notice some leaf loss in early spring. I usually fertilise my tree every 3 months (start of each season) but I have never used zinc / gypsum. Are you using the regular Dynamic Lifter or the one for fruit and citrus? How much gypsum do you use? Thanks | About the Author Harry Roxburgh Park 16th November 2014 12:25pm #UserID: 4975 Posts: 46 View All Harry's Edible Fruit Trees |
