Avocado tree help

    4 responses

HuggieJo starts with ...
Can anyone help me with identifying what is wrong with my avocado tree. I am not sure what type of avocado it is, it is approximately 8 years old though.

I have noticed an area on the trunk where the bark is split and it has white growth on it. One of the splits is approx 1-2cm deep. It is currently in bloom and has a lot of small fruit already growing. Leaves look healthy too, and apart from the marks shown on pictures it seems happy.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as it’s one of our favourite trees and if we can save it, that would be amazing.

Hi HuggieJo,

It looks like your Avocado got Borer attacked. If that is the case use the thin wire Skew through the hole to kill the insect if possible or to syringe oil-based compounds into borer holes. You need to seal the holes to stop intruders in the future. Cheers

Thank you for your reply. It’s not just one hole, it’s a large area of bark split open, with white growth. Wondering if it’s rot?

Not sure whether it is the powdery dust from their working and get mould after many months in humid condition or something else.
I suggest to remedy this situation regardless:
1. to syringe oil-based compounds into borer holes to kill any borers inside if they are still there
2. scrape/clean all white growth on the barks
3. Use water base putting to seal all the holes after inject the oil based compounds
4. use water base paint to cover all the infected areas. Cheers

Thank you very much. I will get onto this today. Thankfully the tree isn’t showing other signs of stress so fingers crossed we got it in time. I appreciate your advice
