Avocado Trees in Subtropics

    2 responses

I have 3 avocado trees that I purchased from Daley's. An Bacon, a Feurte and a Pinkerton. I would like to keep them all to 3 meters max height to enable me to harvest fruit without a ladder. How much space should I allow between each tree if I am keeping them this short?

I took the following extract from the web.

"If sufficient land is available a wider spacing is preferred. Planting distances is a much debated subject. A higher planting density gives higher returns in the early years of the planting, but it can also give more canopy management problems in later years."

"Many old plantings are 10 to 12 metre spacings. More recently, spacings are 12 by 6m, 10 by 5m, 8 by 4m or similar distances."

If it was me, I would plant them 3 to 4m apart if I was going to ensure the plant was going to be pruned to 3m high. This is what I have done with my pinkerton and sharwill.

A geezer in NZ is growing very close spacing on rows of mounded soil. They are kept to the 3 to 4 meter height which gives heaps of sunshine to the whole trees that gives great harvest and more convenient to pick etc
