Black Bean

    2 responses

Shaun starts with ...
I have seen black beans sold in packets in Asian Grocers.
I have been intrigue by this black Bean for quiter some time.
So, if anyone out there knows the answer to the following questions, pleas help out:
1) Are these the same sort of beans Chinese use to make Black Bean sauce?
2) Is this Black bean a variety of Soya beans?
3) Can I grow this Black bean if I buy a packet of seed from the Asian Grocer? (I had asked the Grocer, but they don't know if the seeds will germinate).
4) How do you cook & eat these Black beans other than making Black bean sauce from them ?

Thanks in advance !!
:-)

Hi Shaun,

I assume these dried beans are in packets in the food session.

1) I don't think that blackbean is used to make blackbean sauce. The one for black bean sauce is a bit bigger in size.

2) No, it is not a kind of soya bean

3) if the packet said Made in Australia then you can, if not then radiation process would stop them from germination

4) you cook the beans in diluted coconut milk until soften then add sticky rice and cook them same way as normal rice but using a bit less water then normal rice (water level is a touch higher than rice). If you like sweet than add a couple of table spoons of sugar and a pinch of salt to taste.
For savory flavour just 1/4 teaspoon of salt.

Another way is cook the beans in diluted coconut milk until soften then add sugar and have it as a desert. Tapioca pearl can be added while boiling the beans.

Black bean sauce is made from fermented soya beans. The dried black beans are most likely going to be black turtle beans. These are also used in a lot of Central and South Anerican cuisines. They have a relatively rich flavour with a creamy texture. I'm sure you could buy viable seed on line if you want to grow them.
