Joelle starts with ... I have a Black sapote about 1 year old, kept inside. It has been growing well (approx. doubled in size from when I bought it), until now. Some of the leaves are going pale & have spots on the underside which appear to weep (for lack of a better word). The leaves also have some brown lines on them & some look like they have been eaten or burnt. The top of the trunk also has what appears to be white powder (not a lot). I'm not sure if it has a fungal infection or insects, though I havent seen any. I'm not a green thumb, and any help would be appreciated. Thanks. | About the Author Joelle Morwell Vic. 4th October 2007 11:03am #UserID: 350 Posts: 1 View All Joelle's Edible Fruit Trees |
lachlann says... I hope you are giving the tree fresh air and rain in a protected spot when the weather outside is mild, being careful not to expose the tree to sudden hot sun if it is not used to it. Have you checked the tree for mites? They love dry indoor conditions and build tiny webs. Sometimes you can see the specks moving on tiny webs. Sometimes they can be found by flicking a leaf so that they fall onto white paper. Confidor fixes them. Are you giving the tree careful but adequate nutrition? Such as a small amount of osmocote? Supplimentary potassium is a safe way of increasing disease resistance. And the safest way to give potassium is probably in seasol. Violet Cactus says... Joelle, congrats on growing a Black Sapote in Victoria! I look forward eagerly to hearing how it is going. I am in Melbourne and would LOVE to grow Diospyros digyna. I wonder if Daleys will ever offer a cold-hardy version? I did not know whether the tree would grow in a pot so that I could bring it indoors in winter. I would also be interested to find out if it will bear fruit in a pot. So please keep the forum posted on how your tree is doing, Joelle! | About the Author VioletCactus1 Melbourne 10th December 2009 5:53pm #UserID: 516 Posts: 349 View All VioletCactus1's Edible Fruit Trees |
Joelle says... My Black Sapote is now as tall as I am (approx 5'7"). It is still inside in a pot. It has had flowers on it two years in a row but has not produced fruit. I'm still hopeful. I've been told that it may need humidity as well as the heat and since it is getting too big for its pot I'm looking at getting a green house & planting it outside. My mother has one the same age which she has kept outside, it is sturdier but sill quite small. It has not yet had any flowers (my mother lives in East Gippsland). | About the Author Joelle1 Morwell 15th December 2009 9:11pm #UserID: 3120 Posts: 1 View All Joelle1's Edible Fruit Trees |
Beverly says... I have a ten year old Black Sapote and has only beard two pieces of fruit. It gets loads of flowers but all turn black and drop off. Is this because there is no more bees up here where I live because a lot of people seem to fear them for many reasons and call the in the pear controllers to eradicTe them. Have never ever heard of this being done until I worked for a pest control company.so would this because there are nobp bees? | About the Author Beverly3 Proserpine 18th January 2013 8:15am #UserID: 7624 Posts: 1 View All Beverly3's Edible Fruit Trees |
